Knees randomly started hurting...

Options
So all my life whenever I've worked out I have been able to do squats, lunges, etc. Just recently, as in within the past 3 months or so, about half the time I am doing these things (specifically lunges seems to be the main culprit) it kills my knees and I have to stop.

WHY??

I'm not doing anything differently and it's not every single time i do them so i just doing get it. What do you do when your knees hurt? Is there any way to get past it or do you just have to stop doing these types of exercises?

Any thoughts?

My elbows get killed every time I workout... for me it's a combination of osteoarthritis and tendinitis. I've found that it's much more manageable and much less painful when I'm bulking and in a surplus. When I'm in a constant deficit my joints just get crunchier and crunchier the longer I cut. Arthritis is just one culprit of knee/joint pain - but it could also be a number of other things... best check in with a doctor and see what they say about it.

When I don't know why my knees hurt I go to my doctor. If they don't know why or they aren't really trying (or they don't seem to be trying) then I get a second opinion (from another doctor, not the internet). Try going to an orthopedist. In terms of whether or not you will "get past it" and be able to resume the exercises that aggravate it, that's wholly dependent on the source of your pain and the type of exercises you're doing.

lunges are knee killers. if the pain is really bad go to the dr. If you dont think its serious enough for a dr, you can try wearing compression knee sleeves. I wear them and they are really help me. Some people say never wear knee sleeves, but other people like me swear by their benefits . Use your own judgement

If it's interfering with your exercise routine or daily life, go to a doctor and get a diagnosis. Some knee problems are temporary. Some are permanent. Some require surgery, others don't. Exercising with pain is OK with some kinds of knee problems, where with other knee problems, you can be on a path to irreversible damage. Even if it's minor, there may be some pain-remediating treatment, or a physical therapy referral may help you exercise without causing yourself pain or problems.

I have knee pain, my rowing double partner has knee pain. We go to the same orthopedist. We had somewhat similar pain. We got completely different diagnoses, completely different treatments, and completely different lists of "dos" and "don'ts". I could have surgery (but am not burning bridges by not having it right away). There currently is no surgery for what she has.

    Get it diagnosed.

I’ve struggled with squats in the past. Lunges I suck at, so wasn’t too worried about those, but I used to do squats a bit more regularly. Wondered why my knees were sore on and off.
Last year I tore my MCL ligament in my knee during a skiing accident, and had an MRI, which showed up some arthritic changes in my knees. I was surprised because I felt to young, but my orthopaedic specialist told me that it can be seen in some people, even as young as 20.
So I’m a bit more careful now as a result!

Could be so many different issues, I agree with the advice to seek a diagnosis.

Lunges have been hurting me lately as well. I took a couple weeks and did yoga. Another good one would be something like p90x Dynamix which is essentially warmup calisthenics. Just to keep them warm and work on the stability elements. An easy on the knees alternative to lunges is step ups. I'm getting ready to get back at it, I will do squats but am keeping lunges off the table for a little while.

Maybe try wrapping them with compression wraps? It helped my knees.

Thank you, I have been looking for an alternative to lunges. Step-ups are a great idea I never thought of!
