Well there is the number of calories you burn each day by just being - BMR - Base metabolic Rate. That's the calories burned if you were comatose.
The theres the NEAT - thats Non Exercise Adapted Thermogenis - so that's activity you do when you get up, just general moving about in an ordinary day - that burns calories on top of your BMR.
Then theres your TDEE, thats your Total Daily Energy Expediture - so if you exercise your TDEE is your BMR + NEAT + exercise.
Am I confusing you yet? LOL
So if you want to lose weight by burning calories alone. And you've found your TDEE is e.g 2500 cals (thats just a random number), you could lose 1lb a week by burning 500 cals a day, in other words taking in less than 2000 cals.
Does this answer your question?1 -
If you set MFP to maintain that will be the amount of calories it estimates for you to maintain your weight and that will be pretty close to your TDEE at your current height.
You can also try an online TDEE calculator ie Scooby Workshop - both should be fairly similar figures. Both will just be an idea because everyone is different. But its a good guideline to begin with.
If you want to lose you will change your goal settings to lose and you will be given the calories to eat at to lose.1
