So long story short, I’ve been hitting the gym pretty consistently for the last six months. I’ve gotten to the point where I look forward to going to the gym. Lifting time is MY time.

Unfortunately, due to ego, I’ve injured my back. Just strained it I think. I’m feeling pretty depressed that I won’t be able to work out for a few days to a week. I feel like my journey is over. I know that’s just nonsense but it’s affecting me all the same.

How did you get over your first gym setback?

How did you get over your first gym setback?
First set back was hurting my back deadlifting only 115 pounds. I had training planned for the next day what I did was 1: I didn’t panic; 2: Resolved to go to the gym the next day and train what I could; 3: Instead of avoiding the back pain, I moved and stretched into it.

Few days later basically no pain.

I can now deadlift 255/562 lbs four years later.

It depends. How do you really feel? Do you feel like you need medical attention? Or are you just really sore?
Use your best judgement. You might be able to get right back in a few days without issue.

My first setback was devastating and made me second guess myself for a very long time afterwards.

I've never hurt myself in the gym but did have a back problem that prevented me from lifting for a month. I reminded myself that I will likely live for 40-50 more years and one month out of the next 500 or so months is not a big deal.

    1. Figure out why? Form, weight, etc
    2. Get back into it slowly. Take the time to heal, but keep moving.
    3. Fix whatever happened in 1.

I remember my first setback. It was the intersection of minor poor form and a second of inattention.

If you simply focus on the loss of your training it can be demoralising, even though you know that 1 week out of 52 weeks is nothing. Instead try to see it as an opportunity to do some light stretching and cardio. Read up on form and watch some videos. Get a gentle massage if it is just a strain.

The most important lesson to learn is that the ego doesn't belong in the gym. You are doing this journey for yourself and no one else and as such, your health should be your short and long term goal. You'll get where you are going, so try not to succumb to strict and unrealistic time constraints or the need to prove yourself to anyone, including yourself.
