What The Health?!?!

So after watching this movie, it was very insightful for me. I'm just wondering if anyone has watched the movie and what you thought of it? Did you change your eating habits after? Did you go vegan? Just wanted to know what people thought.

I read this evidence-based analysis of it: https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/what-the-health-a-movie-with-an-agenda/
tl;dr and for those who don't click links: It's a one-sided, sensationalistic, agenda-driven, propaganda piece full of junk science and outright lies (just like most "documentaries" on Netflix). See link above for a more detailed analysis.25 -
As a movie to encourage those who have already made a decision to go plant based, I guess it was okay. If you expect it to summarize the science, then it's a flop (like all netflix health documentaries). I was already vegan when it dame out, and my personal opinion is that the ethical case for veganism is strong, but the health case is basically non-existent. However, I know many vegans don't agree with that at all.8

I've been vegan for about ten years, but I don't consider "What the Health" to be a good source for information about veganism. I recommend checking out this review, written by an evidence-based vegan RD: https://www.vegan.com/posts/vegan-dietitian-review-what-the-health/8

I have not watched it but my understanding is it is very one-sided, too much propaganda, and that even vegans don't want to be associated with it.4

It is a movie whose purpose is to make money. Sensationalism is a good way to accomplish that.5

You have to take pretty much any "documentary" with a huge grain of salt. Regardless of subject matter, most documentaries are biased and one sided. Data is cherry picked and often outright fabricated to woo the audience to their POV.
Go watch a keto documentary and you will see just the opposite of What the Health, at it will be just as convincing if you're not aware that you're just watching a one sided propaganda film.9 -
I watched one recently about porn.hub and after about 45 minutes I was firmly convinced that the Russian Mafia, Monsanto, Newt Gingrich and Oprah where all conspiring to poison our water and launder money so they could anoint Elvis as our one and true leader.
... actually only got through about 10 minutes before I had to try to explain to my wife that it wasn't porn I was watching but a Netflix documentary about - eh, I just gave up and we watched a documentary about monkeys.6 -
I quit watching as soon as they told me eating meat was comparable to smoking cigarettes.11

I suppose the monkey documentary was against eating them... typical propaganda nonsense.4 -

Actually about those sneaky little buggers learning how to steal from humans.
I did watch most of "What the Health" and found it laughable... on the other side of the aisle is "The Magic Pill" which is just as terrible. Aside from the nature shows and docuseries on Netflix they are all just horrible. I mostly wonder at the people that watch them and then decide to make dramatic life choices without further research.2 -
OP, I would never make health decisions based on a documentary. Documentaries are not required to tell you the whole truth, or even any truth at all. They pick one or two truthful pieces of research, blow them up to dramatic extremes, and leave out any part of the stories they are telling that don't support their point.
If one inspires you to look for the other side of the story, then some unbiased opinions, then use your common sense to learn more about the subject, that's great. But you shouldn't take any documentary seriously as the whole story. Even the folks who made it only meant it to be one side of the story and entertaining.4 -
Before you change your diet, watch The Magic Pill (also on Netflix). It’s basically the same movie but supports keto instead of veganism. Comparing the two you’ll see how easy it is to create a very convincing documentary by cherry picking and using sensationalism to get your point across. Neither movie is correct and neither movie shows the actual full landscape of nutrition research.8

If one based their diet off the woo and propaganda in various Netflix "documentaries", they'd starve to death because there would be nothing left to eat that wasn't 'deadly' according to one of them. They're all a bunch of garbage.8 -
Stupiddddddd. Didn’t even want to read through the comments. Just wanted to state the ridiculousness of this movie2

Like most documentaries on Netflix? No. Like most diet and/or weight related ones? Yes. Otherwise I agree with your quick summary.

I think leafy greens and raw mushrooms are still ok across the board but I’d rather not spend the entire day chewing.0 -
I agree with ZDogg MD's take on that "documentary." https://youtu.be/skIGCoopR-g2

My friends saw this and are all suddenly "woke". They're eating French fries and salads, eliminaging huge protein sources with no consideration of nutrition, and are wondering why their hair is falling out. I wish this propaganda piece would go away. Just maybe it would open the door to someone wanting to get a real education on veganism and ethical treatment of animals.2

Side note, did anyone else think What the Health’s documentarian was a huge jerk? I couldn’t get over how he expected the phone operators at the ADA to answer questions about website content. It made me wonder if he’s ever worked in an office before because that is such a ridiculous question to ask the poor schmuck answering the phone for $15 an hour.1

Common sense and honesty take a backseat to hype in mockumentaries like that.0
