Hi, would love some advice. I'm doing a duathlon on August 31. 2K run, 30K bike, 7K run. I'm new to the cycling world and have been riding my 20+ yr old mountain bike. Longest ride has been 22 miles. So yes, I can ride the 30K on my bike no problem.

My question is, should I by a road bike now or wait to see if I enjoy the race and then go from there. Problem is, I know a good road bike will cost a pretty penny. I've seen an inexpensive one for $599 and thought this might be a good deal for a beginner. Brand name is Jamis Ventura Sport.

Keep in mind I'm going for completing not competing. :)

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would do the race on your mtn bike, I only say this because you know your current bike. Sure you can learn a new bike in that time, but bike handling is different on a road bike, and not something I would rush into. I would get some slick tires for it though, these can be picked up at your local bike store.

I would also advise going into your LBS and trying a few bikes out. Go to 2 or 3 bike stores, ask questions.

Get a bike that fits. Your LBS will help with this.

You will also find that once you do ride a road bike, you will love riding even more. They are lighter, faster, easier up hills, etc.

Don't be afraid to spend the money on the bike, it's a worthwhile investment. If you can wait, wait until the 2014 models come out, then you should be able to get a 2013 model for cheaper.

Many bike stores will do layaway/payment plans

    Have fun!

I bought a good road bike because I want to do the Ironman next year, a road bike feels much better than a mountain bike, 30km isn't very long so it should be ok. Slick tires would make a huge difference and won't cost you a fortune!

I would do the race on the mountain bike, but like others said, swap the tires out. It will be a faster and smoother ride.

And take your time looking for a road bike. You want one that fits you properly so you will be comfortable and use it. Plus, the $$ will be worth it. I have been riding the same bike for 14 years (off and on since I didn't ride while pregnant). I ride it all winter as well since my dh bought me a trainer for my birthday a few years ago. Good luck!!
