So I recently decided to get back into swimming after 15years. When u was swimmer I was lean had a sting back and shoulders. Not sure if anyone else on MFP swims as well but thought this would be a great thread for swimmers or people wanting to work on different water exercises. If you are what is one thing you are wanting to work on??

I wasn't a competitive swimmer, was never a qualified ocean lifeguard, and am unfamiliar with the butterfly stroke and the combat stroke which are my sister's strengths, however when in the pool I only work on 2 strokes - freestyle and breaststroke, as she'd advised me. We target 50 laps x 50 m of each stroke a day. Sometimes, it's a split and at other times, we just knock it out.

I WAS a competitive swimmer and a qualified pool lifeguard, but I've let myself get so far out of shape that 50 laps is unreachable for me now. I'm going back to the pool next week so I'll see how far I have to go and what I need to work on. HINT: It will probably be embarrassingly easy by most people's standards, but I love swimming. It is, imo, the ultimate exercise, both in terms of effectiveness and enjoyability.

It is extremely effective; few exercises allow you to burn calories faster if you go all out. And it is a true full body exercise. I like it for HIIT also. I don't swim nearly as often as I used to. I should start hitting the neighborhood pool at night.

I just started swimming laps a year ago with my husband's help and you tube videos hahaha. I love it. I did a Rookie triathlon last month (very slow but not last). I am going to take a few private swim lessons per my husband's suggestions to work on a more effective stroke. But it is all good and as CarvedTones said it is very effective for me aerobic and full body exercise. Next winter I plan to join a master's swim group.

I've been swimming with my local masters for about 2 years, and was a swimmer in high school. I find that it's the only exercise I can consistently motivate myself for, besides brisk walking. Just so soothing to me and I feel like I get both a cardio and strength workout in one. I usually get between 2500-3000 yards in per hour of swimming, and generally follow whatever workout the coach puts on the board.

I really want to work on my core and arm strength so I'll be investing in some training paddles soon.

I just started swimming for exercise. I had to give up cycling due to knee pain. I don't enjoy it at all, but it's the only cardio exercise my body can do.

I only get to swim regularly in the summer, so the first few times are just re-acclimating myself and getting used to breathing and stroke technique. My arms get tired at first. Then, I try to push myself to see if I can get to a mile in 30 min. I usually can't...Mostly I just alternate between freestyle and breastroke, working on increasing my time spent in freestyle without tiring. I use breaststroke as my recovery.

I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years and also a lifeguard. I still swim for fun, I don't do the 7 hrs a day/6 days a week workouts anymore :) but I enjoy just getting in and doing 30 mins every few days! Feel free to add me!

Hi swimmers!!! I restarted after 15 year break at 36. I have been back in for 10 years. I do 45 min before work in the mornings when I am in town (2-5 times a week) plus sometimes get a weekend in and then do a masters workout Thursday evenings - sometimes winds up as a double!!! I enjoy it. I will run now and again when it’s not painful. But I enjoy that I am doing it. Not like I used to by any stretch of the imagination, but still doin it!!!!

Thanks to a new myfitnesspal member - I've only just been attentioned to a sport, I didn't even know has existed for some years. For having only just briefly watched a few games - ...Underwater hockey. Looks fun!
