Diabetic - returning

I havent been active on MFP since March 2013!

My original goal was 185lb and I started at 285. By the time I stopped using MFP i'd got to 235 and since then i've had ups and downs.

In December 2014 I was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Since then i've been on insulin. I lost more weight in an unhealthy way and was recently diagnosed with Bulemia. I'm now undergoing care and therapy to fix my poor relationship with food.

The positive is that im really enjoying fitness at the moment. I go to the gym 5 times a week. I'm doing well on the couch to 5k programme and i'm getting stronger lifting weights.

At the moment i'm 210lbs, my goal is still 185lb but i'll use weight as only one indicator and I wont obsess about it. My real goals are:

- Control my blood glucose with Hb1AC <8mmol.
- 15% body fat. (25% at the moment.)
- 10 chin ups (can do 1 currently)
- 5k in under 25mins (i'm currently on 3.5k)
- 80 push ups in one go. (can do about 25)

After these i'll set further goals :)

Looking to connect with similar people. Any diabetics into lifting weights, anyone with an eating disorder that is now fitness training etc. Thanks for reading <3

@bufger I am going to move this to the gaining weight and body building forums. I realize that isn't exactly your goal, but I think you will find more weight lifters there :)

Hey @bufger! I'm a recovering (recovered?) disordered eater. I had issues with anorexia in high school and have suffered from binge eating (followed by severe restriction) most of my life. I started lifting...gosh, about five years ago...and it completely changed my perspective. Best of luck to you!

I'm a type 1 diabetic, and I run and lift weights. Diabulimia, as I'm sure you know, can be extremely dangerous. In fact, it can be deadly in a short time if you take it too far. Otherwise, it causes more long-term issues.

Anyway, feel free to send me a friend request if you are interested in seeing what I do.

By the way, do you know where you are in the honeymoon phase?

I'm type 1, and working on recovery from atypical anorexia, which has had a component of insulin withholding (not my preferred method, but as a last resort sort of thing...) I just went on the Medtronic 670G, since I'm profoundly hypo unaware, which just gets exacerbated when I get stuck in a restriction cycle, especially in the summer.

I try to keep pretty active, and my dietitian had me start strength training so that I could keep my BF percentage where I like it, and so that I could try to feel better in general. After some rough starts, it's actually pretty nice.

Health concerns aside, keep this in mind: The weight you lose by not doing your insulin is just water weight, and it comes back with a vengeance once you stop. I've also found that by keeping better control, I'm not as hungry, and thus I'm not dealing with that mind battle of "I want food, but I don't feel like I can eat, so IDEK what to do right now."

Also feel free to friend me. I don't keep an open diary, but I'm happy to be a cheerleader.

Thanks all. My BG is stable for the first time in years! so thats win #1. Lifting weights really helps keep it level and I havent needed much insulin. Still working on the strength, i've started a stronglifts based programme doing overhead press, rows, squats, bench press and deadlift. I'm really enjoying it! Totally newbie so im working more on form at the moment but its good fun and im already seeing results.

    Good luck to you all.
