Sugar cravings

I'm trying to figure out ways to overcome a sweet tooth. I have cravings for a caramel sundae from Sonic. I'm wondering if I'll gain weight or maintain the same weight instead of losing if I eat a sundae or snacks even though my daily calorie intake is low.

If you stick to your calorie target, you'll lose at the expected rate,2

That sundae is 510 calories. A particular food isn't going to make you gain weight. If you eat more calories than your body uses, you will gain weight. Calories in, calories out.3

I love the occasional seeet foods. I’ve learnt to allow myself some treats occasionally, and have also found some lower calorie substitutes- if I’m in the mood for ice cream, I’ve found sorbet that I love that I have instead. If I’m feeling like something chocolatey, a Fibre one brownie hits the spot, or a sugar free hot chocolate. I’ve learnt that I’d rather have these, and stay in my calorie deficit, than their higher-calorie alternatives.
But you can still have your treats.... just work them into your weekly calories so you stay in a deficit.

My trick is to substitute lower calories foods for the ones I crave (not always). I’ve never been to Sonic, but if I wanted a caramel shake, I would make a quest salted caramel ice cream fluff with Walden farm 0 calorie caramel syrup. Giant bowl for maybe 125 cals.2

Instead of an ice cream sunday you could try a caramel froyo or vanilla with caramel sauce for about 200 calories or so. See if that hits the spot.0

Food in and of itself doesn’t make you fat, it’s how much of it you eat that does. You can have sweet foods, you can even have that 500 calorie sundae if you want, as it is entirely possible to fit it within your calorie goals. However, it won’t leave much room for other foods. Personally, I would substitute it for a less calorie dense alternative, as I do with many other things. Such as a low calorie ice cream like halo top or maybe some sugar free candy.0

I respectfully suggest that you have a specific sensory craving that is more complex than the sugar content of that sundae. There’s the cool creamy sensation (high fat also) from the ice cream and the gooey texture of the caramel.
There’s also the recollection of other happy days you enjoyed a sundae. Eating it again can bring all those happy memories flooding back.
From personal experience I have found that avoiding my crave can result in eating twice as many calories from other things trying to compensate. It might be a cheaper alternative calorie wise just to eat the darn thing and get it over with. Account for the calories.
Please eat it slowly and anchor the pleasure in your memory. Done thoughtfully you can increase your pleasure from recalling the event later. Calorie free.
Here are other ideas:
Get yourself some Halo Top and sugar free caramel sauce and see if you can create a lower calorie replacement.
Share your Sundae with a friend. Half the calories this way.4
