Labyrinthitis or other inner ear infections?

I was diagnosed this past weekend with viral labyrinthitis after suddenly fainting in my kitchen last Thursday followed by constant dizziness and nausea. Does anyone else have experience with this or a related virus? If so, how long did it last? So far I'm not improving at all and the doctor said I should see improvement by the end of the week, but it may not clear up completely for a few weeks. I feel really helpless. I can't drive, exercise, walk up or down our stairs, shower unattended, etc. I really want to drown myself in a giant tub of ice cream, but I'm trying hard not to fall off the bandwagon with my diet too.

I've had it twice. Prednisone was the only thing that cleared it both times. Alas, prednisone is a big ole bummer.0

Bad memory for me, I caught this back in 2003. It was misdiagnosed twice. Before the Dr's got on the same page. It took about 7 weeks to totally clear up. I had the issue of dizziness and not able to drive car. I kind of remember feeling like I was locked in a fun house that was not fun. Walking at a tilt all of the time. Sending strength thoughts to you.0

I had it and actually lost my hearing for a week. Predinose was what finally worked. They had me on Antivert (Dramamine) for the dizziness, but it made things worse. I still have tinnitus as a result. Lasted two weeks. I was pretty much laid up in bed and don’t recall having any appetite.0

Labryrinthitis turns into vertigo. My seasonal allergies triggered it. My sudafed (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) took care of that.0

They gave me Antivert too and it hasn't worked at all, so I quit taking it.
Thanks everyone! I may have to press the doctor to prescribe some Prednisone and see if that works.1 -
My daughter had vertigo and tinnitus and couldn’t drive, ending up being in bed and all while still forcing herself to get up b/c had 2 very active girls to get to school and in gymnastics and sports. She was put on meclizine for vertigo and went to PT which found Crystals in her inner ear which cleared after therapy. But meclizine made her very drowsy. After several weeks off the meclizine is now doing well.1
