What exercise do you enjoy, or think you will enjoy?

Can you ring round and see if they have come and try options? Or see if they have an option of monthly payments and commit to one month at each one over a 3 month period and see what you like best and can commit to?

I have been doing 1 PT session and 2 group sessions a week (HIIT mainly & some boxing). I’ve also joined a gym last week for a month and I’m liking it so far. If I keep it up and find availability/busyness at the times I go remain like they are now, which is not busy at all! I’ll sign up for the 12month contract at a cheaper weekly rate.

whatever you think you'll enjoy. i loved insanity, so it really is a case of to each their own.

do a taster session or free trial and see what you like.

maybe think about what your fitness goals are, and then you'll have something to work towards that you can tailor your training to.

It doesn't really matter what we think, what matters is that you find something that you enjoy and that it's at a level you can manage without causing yourself an injury.

I enjoy walking/hiking A LOT(!!), and have recently started working towards the Stronglifts program (I.e. Lifting with just the bar to promote good form, as per directions by my physio), which I am enjoying as well.

What types of activity do you already enjoy? I say that you should start doing that more, and then try out other activities :)

Oh, I also really like yoga! You can videos at home, which I will do if I need to, but definitely prefer attending yoga classes. I don't have any locally, unfortunately. I'm moving in the summer though, and that's on my list of things to look into!

What everyone above is saying: Find something you enjoy.

Plus - whatever you do, start slow and build up gradually. Almost everyone I know who does this successfully started from somewhere. If you are not or have not been exercising/training consistently and recently, you can do more harm (both physically and mentally) if you try to do too much too fast.

So again, find something you enjoy and use appropriate rest. (Rest and recovery is as important as the activity).

It might be a good idea to try lots of different forms of exercise - it is not necessary to become an expert in one to succeed at being active. You could try different forms of dance -adult ballet is now quite popular - tap, jazz, jive, zumba, salsa or ballroom. Yoga Swimming is really good for you and is not load bearing so a useful start - or an aquafit class can be fun if you like a social activity. Walking is free and easy to start, download walking videos for indoor trining in hot or cold weather or join the many walking groups out there is you fancy company. Couch to 5K has helped introduce lots of people to running. So many fun options and things to try - if you don't like one move on. Of course there is always the gym. Exercise is good for your health and fitness but is also an excellent way of lifting spirits and meeting new people. Just got to start somewhere. Good Luck and go and enjoy

We have a bunch of all round gyms here that offer different options.

However, what I've learned by now is that it doesn't matter all that much which kind of gym you pick but what their service offers. I've been a cheapskate for so long but that meant I'd sign up for the really cheap gyms that didn't have real trainers working there, mostly just some students who'd explain the machines to you but that's it. If you don't know what you're doing, you'll want someone to work out a good strategy with you.
