How many calories per push up etc?

On mfp it calculates calories burnt per minute of pushup, sit ups, but I think that is different for everyone, even if it is "vigorous" etc.

Is there a way to calculate how many calories I burn per amount? Like, if I do 100 puships, and am 120 lbs.. . I will burn....

Thanks!

I think I would use a heart rate monitor

is there any way to estimate it without a heart rate monitor ?even if its not exact

Push-ups don't really burn much since it's a resistance building exercise unless you're super setting push-ups in a circuit.

It's minimal. Maybe 1 cal per pushup, If that. And remember, you burn calories just lying there breathing, so you have to subtract those. Strength training doesn't burn a lot of cals at the time but it supposedly increases your metabolism enough to get an increased burn for hours later, which also can't be measured. Do pushups, but not for the calorie burn.

HRM isn't accurate for strength training and the object of strength training isn't calorie burn because it doesn't actually burn that much. The idea is to build muscle which in turn takes more fuel all day long to maintain.

Not really. I am over my calories for the day and would like to burn a certain amount. I can't do 15 minutes "vigorous effort", but I can do 100 over a period of time with breaks. I'm trying to follow this as precisely as I can, because it works when I do.

Jog in place, fake jump rope, do jumping jacks, burpees, just about anything will burn more calories than doing push ups especially if you only do a few then take a break.

Or maybe focus on balancing out the week. And know that MFP calculates you at a deficit. Eating 50 or 100 cals over is okay.

    run for 15 minutes

    sometimes that's not an option.

sometime I ask questions on here and get helpful replies, but then hate it because 9/10 replies are people trying to put others down, and being all "i know fitness more than you, your questions are dumb, you aren't doing it right". thanks for the 1/10 that give honest answers, even if the question may seem simple to you fitness types.

anyways, thanks for those that help. that link was really helpful too, and it really doesn't seem like it burns much. I feel like if I knew an exact number (eg 50 cals is 300 puships, that would be a goal, but it doesn't look like it is possible)

Well that depends on the weight of op, and the angle at which she is bending her elbows. Your calorie estimation sounds more like that of a man's pushup.

Say you are 156 pounds (the average woman in the US), and you do a pushup with elbows down to a 90 degree angle. You would burn approximately 1.14 calories per pushup.

when is running not an option?

    knee injury (current reason)

late at night no treadmill (other times)
wanting to take a day off from running and work on strength but still eat the same amount of caloruies and stay in limits (other times)

    :(((

So sad that a fitness site has to be some little clique that thrives on put downs. From a quick search you probably burn 1 calorie per push up, depending a bit on fitness level, weight, how quickly you do them etc.

You could time them if you want to use the MFP estimate, but it might be rather high. For example if you can't do 15 minutes vigorous effort try 3 minutes 5 times.

You're forgetting about the speed at which she performs the pushup. An average paced pushup will guarantee 1.14 calories, but you can maximize the burn to about 1.48 by doing it more forcefully.

You forgot to say "approximately" (because 2.189572629833 is obviously an approximation of a number with many more significant digits. )

I get wanting to be accurate, but everything is an estimate to some degree or another. Your food logging, your NEAT, your BMR, your exercise. To try to get it as accurate as possible can drive people nuts...and it will not be accurate in any event.

To be honest, you will not burn enough calories doing push ups to be meaningful in terms of calorie burn in the scheme of things.

If you're going for quick and dirty calorie burn, get a jump rope. You can do it anywhere for any length of time and it will be more effective than pushups.

But she indicated she may, or may not have a knee injury.
