One Ingredient "Ice Cream"
I stumbled on this recipe for banana ice cream. You simply slice up a banana into disks. Freeze it overnight. And the pulse in a food processor. You can add in bits of other things for different flavor (I did 1 tbs of peanut butter). Follow the instructions exactly.
I did this for the first time today and OMG IT WAS SO GOOD. I couldn't get over it. I want to make this my sweet snack every day. I'm gonna go buy bananas and prep little frozen bags for the week. Seriously, it was so creamy and sweet. If you like bananas, you have to try this!

If you can afford the calories, the addition of some commercial custard is nice. Adding some frozen berries improves the looks.

Maybe she has dairy sensitivities? I love banana ice cream, I usually make mine with a touch of coconut milk and protein powder. It tastes amazing, doesn't upset my sleep the way real ice-cream can, and helps me reach my protein goals. All wins.11

Serious question...how does ice cream upset sleep? Something having to do with dairy?1 -

Wouldn't adding commercial custard just make it normal ice cream....?1 -
So why not just eat ice cream? You arent really saving any calories at all.
You get quite a lot of volume out of one banana when you blitz it so for the amount of "ice cream" you get there can be a significant calorie saving compared to dairy, even taking account of the peanut butter. I personally don't use peanut butter but with additional frozen fruit, some unsweetened cocoa, instant coffee or just vanilla extract I get something delicious for not much more than the calories in the banana itself, especially if you use artificial sweeteners. And it's fun to play with different flavours!
I have two tupperwares stuffed full of frozen bananas in my fridge right now and a bunch ripening on the counter. I am A Fan of the Banana Nice Cream! It also works well for me because if there's bananas in the freezer when I'm feeling snacky I'll be less likely to go to the shop for something to hit the sweet tooth and come back with a multipack of snickers lol
Edit: Doing the maths because I'm bored, 90kcal for 100g of banana, another 90kcal for the tbs of PB (which I think is quite a lot for that amount of banana), so assuming you don't add anything else that's 180kcal for 115g of icecream. Marks and Spencers peanut butter ice cream is 276kcal(+53%) for that weight and Haagen Daaz is 394kcal(+108%).

it's about 100 calories less with the peanut butter. 200 less with just the banana. maybe thats not a lot to you, but when you are strictly counting calories thats a ton.
but hey if you'd rather just eat regular ice cream, be my guest.

I picked up a yonanas and throw frozen berries in there for a lower calorie/fat "ice cream" (they recommend a banana for texture but I dislike the taste it adds). If i have the extra cals i'll throw in a teaspoon of mini choco chips. that's it.0

She making a healthier choice with the frozen banana since the banana also has fiber and nutrients the processed ice cream typically lacks. If you don't add the PB then gram for gram the plain banana "ice cream" is a better option. I'm sure compared to B&Js PB choices its way less calories.
Good for you OP!10 -

Ice cream also has nutrients, including some that bananas lack. They're different foods, no one choice is going to be "healthier" in all situations.

Not trying to turn this into an argument, but when someone is trying to make healthy choices/positive changes why do people come out of the woodwork to be negative? Maybe she was a pint a night eater of ice cream at one point and now she has found something that is a better option for her. Maybe she's now lactose intolerant and can't eat regular ice cream because it makes her feel poorly. There is so much unnecessary negativity on these boards its no wonder people give up. If you are posting just to be snarky or just want to be a jerk why not just move on? I'm sure most of us have enough of this IRL and don't need it here when they were just trying to share something positive in their life.36

I love making this ice cream, I throw in a few strawberries too to give it a little color. I also like adding a couple tablespoons of almond milk to add creaminess. It's best eaten fresh and made in small batches since if you freeze it it can become rock hard. But I've found that if you freeze it in single serving containers and then microwave for 15-30 seconds you can get that cream consistency again! If I've got some extra calories I can eat I'll throw in two chopped up peanut butter cups (Justin's dark chocolate pb cups).
You can also get a creamy texture from frozen mango chunks. I pair that with a lot of pineapple usually, also very good.
Sometimes I don't want to wait for my fruit to freeze or process anything so I will go for the dairy-free Halo tops.
True that it doesn't save a lot of calories (it can depending on the regular ice cream you buy, some are loaded down with extra calories from chocolate shavings, caramel, peanut butter etc.) but the fiber of the fruit prevents your blood sugar from spiking if you're watching that. And eating fruit doesn't count toward daily added sugar unlike regular ice cream7 -

If someone has a medical need to limit their sugar, they'll want to consider the sugar in fruit as well.
If they don't have a medical need to limit it, it's just an arbitrary number and people should choose the dessert that best fits their preferences and goals.8 -
Why is the comparison “frozen puréed bananas” (I can’t even call that ice cream) compared to Ben and Jerry’s? There are lots of ice cream options to fit all different calorie requirements - Edys Slow Churned is usually about 150 cals/serving, Talenti gelato is around 220 cals/serving, Halo Top and Enlightened have low cal and higher protein options. If the OP has dairy sensitivity then the sorbet options are even lower cal.
It’s not negativity to point out that some of these ice cream alternatives can be just as high cals or higher than the real deal.8 -
Meh, I tried cinnamon roll Halo Top yesterday and wasn't impressed. Banana nice cream is sweeter, creamier, and doesn't have the weird aftertaste and saves a few calories.
However, it is NOT a sub for B&J's. Sometimes only the real thing will do. Anyway, there are different folks with different goals in this thread, and there's nothing wrong with that.5 -

I ask you in all seriousness whether you've tried it? Because I was not a believer either but a frozen banana pureed with just a little nut milk makes something amazingly close to banana flavored ice cream. It's creamy and luscious and really quite delicious.

Not to create an argument but my 2 cents... I don't think anyone here truly thinks they are comparing apples to apples...are we really splitting hairs over the terminology someone uses to describe something? They know it's not "ice cream" lol... geesh! Whatever an individual likes and enjoys and it works for them... DO IT! Do I indulge in gelato now and then? YUP! Do I also enjoy "alternative" ice creams like Enlightened and HaloTop? YUP again! Have I made this frozen banana treat for years with whatever strikes my mood added in. YUP #3, I have even eaten it for breakfast with a bit of natural PB on a stupid hot morning! I enjoy all of these options and choose according to mood and nutritional needs for the day. They all have their place whether it be an indulgent treat, nutritional needs or low cal requirement. Not sure why this is even a "debate" when all she said was she found a healthy alternative she loves? Just weird in my eyes lol!10

Actually bananas make my bg spike and ice cream doesn't, due to the fats and protein in ice cream. Most fruits are okay for me but modern cultivated bananas are basically sugar in a skin. Other diabetics have different experiences, since carb tolerance for different foods is very personal, but it's mistaken to assume that bananas = good and ice cream = bad.4 -

Thank you for sharing. I always appreciate it when people share their tips, recipes, etc. whether or not it's something I personally will use2 -
I bet if you added chocolate chips in that would be the bomb !0
-
I've had the Halo mint chocolate chip and I think a choco chip cookie dough one. Except I have no ice cream self control so I don't buy it very often.
I generally avoid bananas more so for the carbs than the calories... but I miss them and love them. My evening protein shake usually consists of a scoop of protein powder, 1tbsp of PB2 and half a banana. Mmmmm0 -

Sorry I ghosted @DX2JX2 I totally forgot about this thread. It's 100% related to the dairy; I am a little sensitive to milk (milk and cream kill me, but not yogurt or most cheeses for some reason), so if I eat a bowl of ice cream before bed my stomach is in knots halfway though the night. Occasionally frozen custard or gelato is still worth it tbh, so I just make sure to eat it earlier in the day when I'm still moving around a lot, doesn't seem as bad as when I'm trying to sleep! The bananas + protein powder is a very close second on the satisfaction spectrum, so I am not at all unhappy about the trade.

I like the frozen banana faux ice cream or nice cream. I also like regular ice cream and I often find the two to be very close to each other in calories, depending on the brand and additives. Fortunately, we live in a world where I don't have to choose one or the other forever and I can eat them both.3

Maybe you need to be tested for lactose intolerance. Most lactose intolerant people have no problem eating yoghurt because the bacteria has already digested the lactose.2 -
I heard on the radio today that there is a bad banana fungus that could wipe out most of the banana crop on the planet. Eat 'em if you like 'em.0
-
I make this because I've tried to eliminate dairy from my diet. Here's another hack - process some dates w/a little water until creamy and it's almost like caramel. Ahhhh, so amazing!2
-
My kids learned about this from "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood", but they call it banana swirl. They really love it and it helps keep me from tossing overripe bananas. Win/Win.1

Here's another idea for the lactose intolerant on this thread. I had a dairy free chocolate sorbet last night at a restaurant and it was divine. Going to try to make it one of these weekends. I don't have an ice cream maker so will use a technique I've used previously for sorbets. Freeze like granita, breaking up ice crystals with a fork every 30 minutes or so in a metal tray. Then blitz in the food processor once I have a tray filled with slush before re-freezing in a sealable container.

This is the reason I quit participating on these threads. The negatives are so incredibly hard to deal with when no one has a clue what you go thru on a daily basis just to keep off what you've lost. I truly hope I can look past them this time because life is a struggle already for so many of us.
