Does counting calories work?

Hey guys! Any success with counting calories? How long did it take you to lose weight with your recommended consumption per day? Thanks!

It depends if you active, inactive or just plain sedentary. I sit down in the day so sedentary, this site said 1,200 cals. I find at 1,000 i loose weight, that's me. So far lost 56 lbs and feel heaps better for it. Started feb 6th this year. Its slow and sometimes i plateau. Iv plodded through those times and hoping to loose more.16

You're saying you lost 56 pounds in five months? That's not slow, that's extremely fast. And 1200 is the absolute minimum you should be eating.8 -
Eating fewer calories than you burn works ... but don't eat less than 1200 calories.

Creating a calorie deficit causes weight loss.
Calorie counting can work if you are as accurate as possible.1 -
I don't go by the recommended MFP number just because it's too low for me. I started at around 1700, and as I lost weight, I dropped the amount of calories. And I am making sure to eat back any exercise calories I get.... which isn't much since I don't do much exercise at the moment. I am now at 1300 calories, which is my personal minimum, so now I need to step up the exercise so I can eat more. haha
I have dropped 60 lbs over the past year.
I have a goal of 5lbs per month. Some months I lost more, some I lost less, and some I lost nothing or gained a pound. I don't get discouraged because I enjoy my food and enjoy my holidays, but make sure to keep an eye on my portions and weight.
Weighing in daily helps me stay accountable, but I track on MFP a weekly weigh in, as that is more realistic.

This is the only thing that has ever worked for me. I first started on MFP back in 2012 and after trying Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, and other fad diets, I realized that this is the only one that is actually sustainable for me, because it's not a diet.
Counting calories makes me aware of how much I am putting in my body. Counting macros, is making me aware of WHAT I am putting in my body.
I look at food differently now. I still love it, and I still have my pizza, ice cream, nachos, soda, etc.... But I am so much more aware of what food I am consuming.
For me, THAT is why this really works. I don't have to stick with specific foods, I don't have a weird point system that changes every 2 years. I eat whatever I want and I never feel like I am "cheating".6 -

Considering I've been cutting and bulking succesfully for 5 years, I'd say not only does it work, but it's the most precise tool for me. I know some people are good at intuitively bulking and cutting without counting (usually it's people with calorie counting experience), but I know I can't. For me it's like driving blindfolded.2 -

Yes it works but you do need to use the tools given accurately and have patience.
I lost 40lbs in around a year, maintained a while and been focusing more on fitness. Looking to get down another 30-35lbs.2 -
Lost 114 lbs in about 19 months counting calories. Maintaining that for about 3 months now and not major changes.5

Consider this:
Food is energy that your body needs to function
If you eat too much food your body doesn't just not digest this excess food but stores it as fat
If you eat too little food your body gets energy from your fat stores
To lose weight you need to eat less food than your body needs so it starts getting energy from your fat stores.
You can just decide to eat less, but many people are really rubbish at estimating how much they eat. Especially if they grab a handful of something here and there all through the day, or drink something with calories. Or just pour cooking oil into a pan.
Calorie counting, if done correctly makes sure you know how much you're eating. It takes the estimation, and the frustration often related to that out ones daily life and makes things easier. You can for example see:
Oh, I still have 600kcal left for dinner. Great!
or
Oh dear, this thing had so many calories??? Ok, maybe I'll have less of that next time.4 -
I've been using it for less than two weeks but I'd say it works (it's a must to be honest and accurate and fill in all the requested info!). I don't have a lot of weight to lose... I started on May 7th and I'd love to lose a total of 8 kg but I'm already at a healthy weight (64 kg). Having a sedentary lifestyle, my daily calorie goal is 1200 net and I eat 1200->1600/day but depending on how much I exercise, that means 900->1200 net calories (I never starve myself and always being hungry is a very bad idea). The point is that I met my target of losing 0.75 kg in a week with MFP. I'll take it a bit slower now, as losing weight isn't my main target but to answer your question, YES, it works.1

By calorie counting - making sure I am eating at a deficit, I am 180lbs lighter than when I started. So it's been working pretty good for me.2

Yes. It works. Calorie deficit always works. If they say it doesn't, they are not in a deficit. Because science! I have lost 110 pounds in 15 months. However, it doesn't matter how long it takes. Just do it! And start today, not on Monday! Also, starvation mode is a myth! If you are on IG, follow Carter Good. You can do it!!1

Two weeks is perfectly normal for a plateau. I've been between 173 and 174 for nearly two weeks myself. It's no big deal as with time the weight does come off. Weight loss is not linear, aslo less than 1200 calories a day is not good - you're probably missing a lot of micronutrients and risk severe muscle loss and bone density loss if you don't eat enough.1 -
I've been eating at 1200 calories a day and lost a total of 82 lbs that way, took about 2 years. I wasn't super active but I did do calisthenic exercises, Zumba, and lifting dumbbells at home a couple times a week.
I gained 10 lbs in the last year since I moved to a different country and neglected my eating habits so I started my 1200 calorie diet again and I've already lost 4 lbs in 2.5 weeks- I've also gone back to the gym and did more heavy lifting and cardio.
So yes, caloric deficit always works because you're burning more calories than consuming them.1 -
I'm a month in and just now starting to see a shift on the scale. But I also take measurements of my bust, waist, and hips at the widest part. The measurements show an inch loss in all three areas, even when my weight was staying the same.
I work to stay within mfp's recommended 1200 calories and eat back calories I've work off from exercise. I'm sure the weight would come off faster if I didn't eat them back, but I'm usually hungry by the ed of the day and that helps me not freak out and binge eat.
I would rather lose the weight slowly than do the quick loss followed by even more gain that comes with the fad diets.
Like others have said before- I eat what I want but am learning about what foods are worth it and which ones are not. White rice was always a favorite of mine but I have no problem passing it up now that I know how high in calories it is.
Counting calories has been very empowering for me. It is simple. It is precise. It's way easier than feeling helpless and hopeless about being overweight.2 -

I have been on WW online and other similar plans and what I like is the journaling, counting calories because it keeps me accountable and helps me to PLAN!! When i don’t plan I fall off plan... I had lost 36 pounds over a year ago with the Medifast program but as soon as I stopped, I stopped being accountable and gained it all back. 😫 So starting MFP and going to get it right this time. 😉0

Yep absolutely it works. I lost nearly 30kg in 8 months doing calorie counting to a deficit. Give it a try for a month1
