    I believe they can or could have existed.

    Given the age of the universe, billions of years old, and the time it takes to get around it. Other beings could have lived and been wiped out before our current time.

    Just because it is possible for there to be intelligent life on other planets doesn't mean it exists in the same time period as we do. They could have been wiped out, or haven't even gotten started yet.

    The distances separating the stars are so vast that it would take a very advanced civilization—perhaps thousands or even millions of years more advanced than ours—to bridge those distances. In other words, any extraterrestrial civilization that visited us, hypothetically or in reality, would be using a technology that we can only dream about here on planet Earth.

    When we finally take to Mars, we will be the aliens. If there are Martians already up there, they are dreading and ruing the day that we ever show up on their home. We'll be bringing all of our mess with us wherever we go.
