If you cut carbs and don't replace them with something else, you are going to also cut calories.
You can lose water weight by reducing carbs. To lose fat you need to cut calories, from wherever. I generally lower carbs in a deficit as I prioritise protein and fat, not because I want to eat less carbs.12 -
The only way to lose is to create a calorie deficit. It is all about calories. Some create this deficit by reducing carbs while increasing fat and protein. This works for them as it is a means for them to limit cravings and this combination keeps them fuller for longer. Others achieve the same results by eating plenty of complex carbs and fibre as it achieves the same results with satiety as fat does for others. Some have better success with vegan, or Paleo, or ......
You just need to find something you can stick with long term that works. It doesn't even need to be a diet which has a name with heaps of rules.7 -
Calories. If cutting carbs helps you cut calories, then so be it, but it isn’t necessary.7

I’m not sure what bias there is toward cutting calories to achieve weight loss - unless you think the fundamental laws of thermodynamics are biased...
Damn you Newton always pushing your agendas!16 -
You need a calorie deficit to lose weight.
Cut carbs for possible improved health or a decrease in appetite and cravings, which can make weight loss easier.8 -
You have to eat fewer calories than you burn in order to lose weight. It does not matter how many of those calories come from carbs. This isn't "bias"; it is simply how the body uses and stores energy.
You can choose to eat more or fewer carbs depending on your own goals and preferences. If you have a medical condition that could be addressed by eating fewer carbs, then do that. If eating fewer carbs makes you feel better or happier, then eat fewer carbs. If you are an endurance athlete or have other reasons for needing more carbs, then adjust your macros accordingly.
If you simply cut carbs and make no other changes, you are absolutely not guaranteed to lose weight. Cutting carbs does not ensure a calorie deficit, because people often replace carbs with fat and protein. Carbohydrates have more calories per gram than proteins, but fewer calories per gram than fats. Unless you are also cutting calories, you may or may not produce a calorie deficit just by eating fewer carbs.
However, if you cut calories to the extent that you are in a calorie deficit, and you ensure that you are consistently eating at a deficit, then you will lose weight.5 -
Calories are king when it comes to weight loss. You can cut all the carbs you want to, but unless you're creating a calorie deficit, you're not going to lose weight (other than water weight from the water/glycogen depletion that comes along with a low carb diet). No bias there, just scientifically proven fact.4

Why this obsession with maximum loss? I find that a modest deficit leads to success.

I love carbs, and typically have between 160-200g of carbs per day. Aside from that, I also ensure that I get adequate fat and protein into my day.
I’m losing weight just fine.
I eat at a calorie deficit though. That’s how you lose weight.3 -
kcals...
Some math: Protein 4kcal/g, Carbohydrate 4kcal/g, Fat 9kcal/g, EtOH 7kcal/g

This is correct--sorry, college biology classes were a long time ago!0 -
You need a calorie deficit to lose weight.
You do not need to cut carbs to lose weight (if you are in a calorie deficit) so have your carbs set to an amount that makes you feel good.2 -
Cut calories, keep protein and fiber high, and exercise (particularly weight training) so you maintain or improve body composition and concentrate on fat loss.2

Calories, calories, calories...
Take a look at my diary. If sugar and carbs were as bad as some people say, I would be dead 5 times by now.3 -
To lose weight: eat fewer calories than you use.
Carbs do not have magic fat fairy dust in them, neither does sugar, salt, fat, or any other food group.2
