I don't think it's made up, there are people who don't believe in harming any living thing, including plants, so they just eat the parts that don't kill the plant. Wikipedia refers to the Jain religious sect in India as an example of ethical fruitarianism.
I was re-reading the thread and wanted to clarify my post. Fruitarianism as an ethical or spiritual practice is absolutely a thing. In the context of a weight management plan, yes it's absolutely made up.0 -

Why isn't carbohydrates considered an essential nutrient, but fat and protein is? I always thought the 3 macronutrients are necessary for survival, but is it possible to live completely without carbs?
To be fair, fruit isn't 100% carbs since there is still some amount of fat and protein.
If you need a nutrient, and your body can't manufacture it on its own (or get it from other sources besides food, I suppose), then it's an essential nutrient. Your body can manufacture carb-equivalents, but not all the essential fatty acids (fats) or essential amino acids (proteins).
It's not just some macronutrients that are essential nutrients, but also some vitamins and minerals. "Macro" is not any kind of synonym for "essential". "Macro" just means "big" - so macronutrients are useful stuff you would consume in bigger amounts. "Micro" = little, so micronutrients are useful things you would consume in smaller amounts.0
