I ask because there are many variations of the Burpee so I am curious how people do them and want to know what the most popular version seems to be.

I have a bulging disk in my lower back. It’s doing ok now and core strengthening has helped immensely, but I still try and stay away from too much impact, like jumping jacks and burpees for now. My trainer modified burpees for me for now, with stepbacks rather than jumping back and that is ok, but they always live up to their name for me, making me really gassy and icky feeling.

Jump back into plank, do a push up, back up, jump up while reaching for the sky and repeat.

If I’m feeling spunky I add a clap at the top.

I so know what I'm doing the next time they are added to class. ;)

I like to do these in intervals of increasing intensity, 30 secs on 10 secs off, in off mode you just jog in place keep moving. The first interval maybe just pike ups., 2nd interval do plank burpees, 3rd invertal maybe one leg variants, then 1 arm, then add a jump, then finally super burpees, and if you want to go really advanced you can add the reverse burpee or kip up into the mix. Roll back into plow, roll forward and kip up to your feet, jump then a super burpee, throw up on your television, Roll back into plow, rinse and repeat.

Glad you got the vomiting in there. My worst burpee day started with a banana and peanut butter about an hour before the work out session. That was the day I realized that fasted workouts, for early morning sessions was a good idea (for me).

That doesn't fun. Yeah I think I would save the PB and banana for after the workout. But I do eat about an hour before my workouts, especially if its a lifting day. But really light stuff. Fat free yogurt and some berries and definitely coffee.

Make the clap one where you reach up behind your head, so you don't cheap out on that extension.

Jump back into plank, do a push up, back up, jump up while reaching for the sky and repeat.

This at the beginning, the end looks more like 'jump back into plank, flop on the ground, push off my knees for optimal bruising, jump up while reaching for the sky, repeat until death seems imminent'

I usually stand, bend and plant hands, thrust feet back fully extending, then fling feet back towards my hands, crouch, then do a big jump reaching as high as I can. So, no pushup involved in the ones I do.

Also reluctantly - and not as often as I probably should. :D

I might consider them more if I could understand the point. Is there really not any suitable alternative for burpees? I guess I don’t understand why all the jumping around like that is needed for most people.

Poorly, and I complain the whole time.
But they are good for me to do so I try to just keep on going.

    1. Get to gym to begin workout
    2. Attempt first burpee
    3. ?????
    4. Wake up to see paramedics checking your vitals and people crowded around
    5. Post success story on MFP about being a badass doing 50 burpees and passing out

I think they are more for athleticism than anything, their is certainly is easier ways to get a cardio workout in. So if your interest is only in burning calories there is probably no need. My first introduction to the burpee was back in high school during football drills, and we called em by a different name back in the late 80's, suicides is what we called em.

We call that a lazy burpee, or a kickout

Passing out is much less badass than puking and keep going. Just for next time you're bragging on MFP about it.

You all forgot the “swearing profusely” part of these instructions. No burpee session is complete without that!
