I did keto for a year, lost 15lbs. I enjoyed the lack of bloating/gas and the stable hunger/energy levels.
Ultimately, I missed carbs a lot (the cravings never went away), and my cheat meals turned into cheat weeks into cheat months... before I knew it, I regained those 15lbs because I was eating way too many of the carbs I so desperately missed.
Since then I've lost the weight again with simple calorie counting and eating a generally balanced diet. Now I enjoy desserts, pizza, french fries, bread, pastries... all in moderation. And I feel like this method is much more sustainable for the longterm.11 -

Well yeah. Any diet that eliminates or restricts an entire food group is going to cause a calorie deficit.
Not sustainable.

Not true. I know plenty of people who have followed a "Keto Diet" of high fat and low carbs and not lost weight because they were consuming too many calories. Also, I don't eat gluten or dairy due to diagnosed intolerances, so technically I've eliminated 2 food groups, but yet, I still managed to get fat. Honestly, you sound very uneducated about Ketogenic Diets. Maybe next time you troll a post to criticize a WOE other than the one that you have chosen for yourself, you should do a little research on the matter so that you don't sound quite so foolish.

Congrats on losing 12 lbs! I suggest the LCHF board here if you want answers from people who have tried and enjoyed and benefited from keto. I got to my goal weight on keto and am now trying to fine-tune maintenance while keeping a low-carb lifestyle.5

It's the other way around, keto does not directly cause you to lose weight, a caloric deficit does. You can gain weight on keto, I've seen people using keto for bulking believe it or not, although it's not common. Calories is king.9 -

Wrong again. You can still gain weight even by eliminating carbs.8 -

I’m aware of the CICO theory. My point was based on the fact that many people following a Ketogenic diet experience a decrease in appetite which can directly create a deficit.
* See also my post in the same thread where I talk about people gaining weight while following a ketogenic diet or not losing weight by eliminating food groups like gluten or dairy.

Much better.3 -
Try the Low Carber Daily and Keto MFP groups for more success stories and support. Many members have open diaries and there is usually a recipe thread going. It's where I go to talk keto - I'm mainly on the main forums to steer people to those who know more about the diet.
Congrats on your success so far.1 -

This is me. I can't sustain a calorie deficit when I eat higher carb - I'm too hungry. If I cut carbs back, I'm suddenly much less hungry. I can lose easily because of a ketogenic diet.
I'm another who has cut gluten out of my life. Very sustainable.... I'm over three years keto - also sustainable.6 -

There are people here who talk about gaining weight while on Keto as it didn’t fill them up as much as it does others.
When people stop eating carbs, they typically lose a lot of water weight the first couple of weeks. It typically levels out and as long as they remain in a calorie deficit, the weight will continue to come off.
Whatever way of eating that you can maintain for the long haul is the best one for you. Something that makes you feel full and helps you get the needed nutrients.0 -
