This app says not to go over 55 grams of sugar and that sounds like a very easy job expect fruits have lots of sugar and I eats lots of fruit! Anyway, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if 55 grams is too much or too little... thank you!

Calories matter for weight loss. Sugar doesn't. Sugar may matter for health if you have a medical condition like diabetes, but in that case you should talk to your doc about your limits.
MFP uses a general guideline set forth by places like the WHO for sugar to help keep calories in check but still leave room for plenty of other nutrients. You can decide how important it is for you to stick close to those recommendations. I choose not to pay much attention to sugar.4 -
Losing weight is more about how many calories you are eating. Sugar in fruit is fine. Even some processed is fine.
As long as you are in a calorie deficit you will lose weight regardless of the types of food you eat. However of course some foods are more nutritious than others but it is up to you what you eat.5 -
Many of us find it more useful to swap out fiber instead as it's a more useful thing to track for many individuals.4

As much or as little as you want barring medical reasons. Sugar doesn't make us fat, excess calories do.
MFP's sugar goal is 15% of total calories. If you're getting it mostly from natural sources (fruits, vegetables, dairy) and you aren't crowding out other nutrients, you're fine.3 -
I always go over sugar by a lot, couldn't care less. Calories for weight loss, I make sure protein, fiber and micronutrients goals are met.3

I averaged 125g per day while i lost and kept off 50lbs for 6 years because i love fruit. Getting more protein and fiber is my focus though.5
