When you signed up you would have put your stats in - it would have given you a calorie amount based on age, height, sex, weight, activity level and selected rate of loss (you could possibly start at 2lbs per week, but consider dropping to 1lb or 0.5lbs per week as you get closer to your goal). The activity level is not including purposeful exercise.

    What was this number?

That number is the amount you need to eat per day at your current weight to lose at the rate you selected. Without doing any exercise. If you do exercise you add this in and you'll get extra calories - eat at least some these back ( most people recommend only eating half of these back as calorie burns given can be too high)

Calorie deficit means you're eating less calories than your body needs. Because you don't feed it enough calories, it needs to use your body stores to get enough energy to keep running properly.
