when i think of protein shakes i think of what you drink before the gym.. and so i’ve always done that, but a few weeks ago a picture came up on my instagram from a fitness page where it was basically saying how most people drink a protein shake before the gym, and water after - BUT that it should
be the other way around.. and so i’m just curious if there is a reason that you should save the protein shake for after the gym? does it matter? this may sound like a silly question and not that big of a deal but i just wanted to hear more opinions so that i could possibly adjust my routine if there is any benefit .. TIA

The timing of eating pre and post workout only makes a difference if you are an elite athlete. If you like to have one before the gym then cool, if you prefer after the gym then also cool.

Personally, I can't stand the taste of them and get my protein from my food sources. I work out fasted (lifting and cardio) and eat breakfast maybe an hour later when I get to work.

Most of the "information" on Instagram is complete poo, especially if they supply a discount code as that means all they want to do is make money from you.

The best time to take your protein shake would be after your workout. This will prevent your body from using its own muscle tissue for energy and help encourage muscle synthesis

"Despite claims that immediate post-exercise nutritional intake is essential to maximize hypertrophic gains, evidence-based support for such an “anabolic window of opportunity” is far from definitive."
"However, despite the common recommendation to consume protein as soon as possible post-exercise [60, 61], evidence-based support for this practice is currently lacking."

Bottom line: timing isn't real important for anyone but elite athletes.
