Hi everyone! I’m Tom and new to mfp. I have decided to use the app to keep control of my eating habit and get fit and strong again!

There looks to be a good community here and I look forward to sharing my journey with you. Take care, Tom 😊

Hey Tom, I lost 50 lbs since January 1. A New Year's resolution change for me. First time I've ever kept up a resolution and now it feels like a life style. Here's how I did it: Nutrition plan - tried to eat whole foods, tried to avoid simple carbs, just had complex carbs . Ate more veggies, had chicken, fish, turkey, and creative with canned black beans (rinsed), brown rice and canned tomatoe. Can mix other stuff in it too. Ate more spinach salad and bought frozen veggies. Easy to nuke them and mix with a protein. Dropped most bread. Reduced beer, wine and drinks by 97%. Have a craft beer once or twice a month at most. Alcohol destroys your progress in many ways...look it up if you don't know all that it does.

Exercise plan: You have to be consistent with fitness. I do Athlean X. It's so superior to P90X that I can't count the ways. Just get an exercise program that you can consistently do.

Calories per day: I recommend that you figure out your hypo-caloric intake level. Just let myfitness pal give you a number then you can adjust it as you see fit to make it work for you.

Drink at least 80-100 ounces of water a day. Always drink a quart or more when you first wake up.

Ok, I will have to charge you if I say anymore. The keys to the kingdom are written above. Good luck and find a substantial reason that makes changing your lifestyle worth doing all of the above.

I forgot to say that you need to eat good fats: nuts, peanut butter (just with nuts and salt in it, not the crap hydrogenated fat pb's), olive oil, avocado's etc. Healthy fats and keep cholesterol and saturated fats at the American Heart Association levels. I try to eat .75 grams of protein per pound of body weight. My macros try to be: Protein 30-40% Carbs 30-40% and Fats: 20% .

Since I have changed my ways, my blood panels were excellent. My doctor said, "he was proud of me". I am pretty close to a beach body at age 51. Big time change in my body.

As far as exercise goes, go the functional fitness route with athlean x. He has a youtube channel that is second to none. The guy is a master trainer and a he's a Physical Therapist and trains pro athletes. He's the Obi Wan of fitness imo.

I have a different philosophy. My goal is to loose 1 pound by weigh in which is 10 pm on Tuesday. After weigh in I set my goal to loose one pound by 10 pm next Tuesday. No penalty when I don’t make it. No big deal if I weigh 2 pounds less. So far the average has been 1 pound per week.
I have not gotten scientific with reguard to macro nutrients. I simply record every calorie. I guess high when I can’t scan a barcode. For me its 1250 per day.
Some weeks after beginning I didn’t reach my goal. 1 pound. So, I joined a gym. 1 hr per day. I’m reaching my goal each Tuesday.
I don’t get hungry. Coffee seems to curb my appetite. Breakfast is Starbucks w cream. 35 cal
Lunch is a Veggie green salad from the food store salad bar. 0 cal dressing. Some protein on the salad 350 cal. Veggies keep me satisfied.
Dinner is around 700 cal. Fruit before bed.
Other than boring lunch and too much time at the gym, things are good so far.
I don’t have a grand goal like loose 50 lbs or weigh 150. I am just concentrating on loosing 1 pound.
I know that I have to burn 500 extra calories each day to achieve this. 300 of them is from eating 1250 instead of 1550. The other 200 comes from the gym.
I alternate cardio one day and strength the next t try to do 600 calories on cardio days. Strength days are hard for me and I can’t burn a lot because I have gotten out of shape.
I do have a big goal. I plan to take a raft trip down the Crane Canyon in 22 months from now. I don’t know what my weigh will be. I do know that I will be lean and physically fit. It’s an 8 day trip with lots of side canyon hiking. I’ll lead the the group that wants to climb up to see the good stuff.
Good luck Tom. Keep it simple. 21 days and it will be a habit. Slow down and take time for yourself- go to the gym. Don’t drink any calories unless it is coffee creamer 😊

@randyhunn, please read the 'most helpful' threads at the top of each sub-forum and learn how to use MFP correctly.

You are seriously undereating. The minimum for a man is 1500 cals. If you were allotted 1550 cals by MFP, your 1lbs a week deficit is included.

Undereating can lead to short and long term health problems.
There is also the greater chance of giving up your diet, or starting a binge/restrict cycle.

If you exercise, looks like you do, MFP expects you to log that exercise and eat back those calories. As the calorie estimate is general, you may want to eat back 75% and adjust from there.

If, on 1250 and exercise, you are only losing 1lbs a week, I would advise you to start weighing your food, packaged too, with a digital food scale and measuring your liquids, including oils and dressings, with the appropriate cups and spoons.

Double check that the entries you are using are correct. The mfg web site or USDA are useful for this.

    Cheers, h.
