The foods you like, in amounts and proportions to fit your nutritional needs, are best.

What is low carb to you - how many grams are you aiming for?

Quick and direct answer is eat turkey. It's high protein, zero carbs and low fat.

My sodium intake is excessive, so I eat no salt added turkey.

Turkey gives a lot more flexibility for the rest of the day's meals, which keeps things simple.

It's mild (non-existent) flavor means it won't overwhelm the other foods combined with it (like cheese)

Meats, seafood, eggs and full fat dairy are almost carb free. I like to focus on those protein sources first.

For carbs, I find it easier to stay low carb if I avoid grains, including whole grains like corn, rice and oats, as well as refined grains in baked goods and noodles.

The next foods I limit are dried fruits and high sugar tropical fruits like mangos, bananas and grapes, as well as starchy root vegetables like potatoes. You may be able to incorporate these into your carb goals with moderation.

That leaves most fruits and veggies.
