Hypothyroid and on Propranolol (Beta Blockers) Need Help?

I feel like I've started to pile on the pounds lately, and it's starting to get me down, and I suffer with depression already so this is very hard.

About 6 months ago, I had a very bad breakdown over the loss of a friend, and my health anxiety came back like a fireball out of the sky, and catapulted me into my anxiety again. About 3 months ago, my doctor put me on Propranolol 80mg slow release, a type of beta blocker that stops the adrenaline and helps calm you down without being addictive. So far, it's really REALLY helped me relax, too much in fact, as I feel pretty tired everyday, no energy to do anything, and well, just feeling very down.

To add to that, I also have Hypothyroidism but am medicated on Eltroxin 50mcg for that. However, even having that, I was able to lose 10lbs back in August and September of last year, before my anxiety returned.

I'm 30 year old female, 5'5'', and 164lbs at the moment. So, I am classified as overweight. I'd be happy just to get back in the healthy weight range, not looking for some mad weight loss in a week (I'm an adult, not an instagramer lol), I know it's going to take time, and because of being so drained and lacking any energy, I'm trying to do the steps thing? 10,000 steps. The most I'm achieving on most days is about 4-5,000. On a good day, it may be 6-7K.

In the future, I'd like to be about 140lbs would be my ideal weight, and about 5 years ago, I was 145lbs, so I'd like to get back to that while I'm heading into my 30's and not spiral. I also know though, I need to stay on these Beta Blockers for a while until my mental health is back to normal, as I had to stop working last year, and have been working at home since, which is a struggle to be healthy.

Sorry for rambling, I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience losing weight on Beta Blockers or being Hypothyroid? Or anything like that, because I feel like I'm getting fatter, and lazier and no energy, and feeling miserable and it is weighing me down mentally. I'm very restricted in what and where I can go at the moment because of not only the anxiety, but where I live, so things are awkward but I am willing to put in some effort to get back to a normal, healthy weight. I also have IBS and that is making things hard too.

Something I could do at home, I use to with dieting stick to 1200 calories plus walking an hour a day, and that was how I lost weight before, but I don't know if that will work this time around with the medications? Just any little tips and advice would mean so much to me right now. Thank you.

Hey Meeva87, I have never been on beta blockers but I am hypothyroid and have lost over 100 pounds. I'm your height and over 60 years old so hopefully that gives you some hope, lol. It can be done but it may take you a bit longer. The only exercise I have done regularly is walk and I started around 2000 steps a day and worked up. My goal now is 8,000 and some days I get 9 - 11,000 but if I don't it's not the end of the world. I'm maintaining on that regime. You have the right attitude that you are willing to take the time to do it slowly. Hang in there and do it one step at a time.

1200 calories is probably too low for your height, weight, and goal weight. Try for a loss of .5 lbs per week (general recommendation if you have less than 25 pounds to lose. To little food can lead to bingeing and more self-loathing. Better to lose at a slower rate on a number of calories that is more sustainable.

I'm hypothyroid, lost 117 pounds, an 5'3 and weigh about 120 and maintain at 1800-ish. I am able to be very active, though. People like Fitness Blander workouts on YouTube. Also yoga with Adrienne. Both free.

I hope you are able to seek mental health treatment, and are not only given meds, as moving though the anxiety and depression seems like it will cure other ills for you (no pun intended). Without those crippling things weighing you down, you might be able to lose more easily. (OK, I promise I'm stopping with the bad puns--blame my office colleague and his constant string of "dad jokes.")

Thank you! I'm just going to take my time, I can do it if I learn to relax and learn to de-stress as well, now it's just the management of food and intake, along with getting more walking and steps in.

Thank you! I am, I'm having treatment this month with a therapist, to help with other things too and get me more sociable again. I never realized I had less than 25lbs to lose, but when I see it like that, it seems less of a mountain to get over. I will start with the .5lbs and maybe go for 15-1600 calories, I think it will probably work better this time around, along with the walking and aiming for 10K steps.

My fitness tracker seems to overestimate my steps calories--I use this website for my steps (not my "exercise" like the elliptical, but the steps I get every day running to and from meetings and remote parking at work). https://verywellfit.com/pedometer-steps-to-calories-converter-3882595
