Question. Where you willing to go with this? There’s the maple syrup and honey alternatives. There’s the artificial alternatives. There are other natural sweeter alternatives. And fresh fruit. Sure there are other approaches I haven’t listed.

I fought a successful battle with my sweet tooth with a combination of careful portion control, fresh fruit and a bit of Splenda. Many people want zero sugar of any kind and consider Splenda worse than sugar. Some are looking for natural alternatives to white sugar. Everyone is different.

Do you want non-sweet? Then prepare savoury baking.
    Here's a sugar free breadmaker recipe. https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/361132463854513161/

Do you want sweet without the calories? Then use Splenda half sugar, stevia, or another baking stable artificial sweetener.

Do you want to use natural sources of sugar? Then use fruit based sweetening. The Lara bars are based on dates.
These use agave, but I would freely substitute maple syrup or honey.

Just a word of warning. The baking based on fruit syrups and juices can be just as calorific as sugar based baking.

Recipes don't usually call for much sugar unless they're for desserts, cakes or sweets, and desserts, cakes and sweets are for special occasions (in my head), so can't you just use any recipe you want?

I am actually trying to eliminate sweeteners and sugar. I do not use artificial sweeteners and I do not care for Stevia because of its bitter after taste. I am also trying to eliminate refined grain whether it is gluten free or not. I am also going for high fiber. I do occasionally use maple syrup (to sweeten rhubarb) and honey in small amounts. I know I do get sugar in foods when I eat out and some of the dishes my husbands cooks. I am just trying to eliminate these foods as much as I can from my diet. I have done it for two month now and have dropped 17 pounds just doing this. I find I am rarely tempted to eat items with sugar or flour now. I do not restrict any fruits or veggies.

An example of one of my recipes is an alternative to ice cream.
    1 Frozen banana sliced
    Pecans handful about 8
    dash of salt
tbsp natural peanut butter or coconut oil
tbsp greek yogurt or sour cream

Grind and mix in a blender

It comes out like soft serve ice cream.

I originally started eliminating added sugar in my diet for a reduction in calories. I do use Stevia, and other artificial sweeteners quite often though. There are some things, such as coffee, I will never enjoy without some sort of sweetener. I'm just not wired that way. But, I currently have no reason to eliminate sugar as far as health goes. I'm 49, and the doctors tell me to 'watch it' because of a family history of T2 but my labs are all just fine at the moment. But as far as eliminating it all together I see no real reason for it unless there's a health problem. But, if I have the choice for 'no sugar added' or 'sugar free' I will generally choose it unless the price tag of that item is just plain stupid.

I was showing signs of insulin resistance. This is part of the reason for me new diet. After two month 17 pounds down, blood pressure is 117/75 from 135/85, I haven't had insulin or HDL checked yet. I was going to wait until I have done this for six month. My HDL was low the last time it was checked.

Whenever you eat a sweet I suggest you eat a little protein at the same time. Like an apple with nut butter, or cheese with your strawberries.
