I've attempted this weight loss thing sooooo many times. I was super successful when I was in my teens, lost almost 100 lbs.. but now I'm in THE worst shape of my life. I have a 5 yr old son who's life is being affected by my weight and I cannot stand to see that happen any more...My plan right now is to cut carbs and eat meat, cheese and veggies basically...I also am usually an avid whiskey drinker so that is absolutely being cut as well.. Anyone out there who is willing to friend me and share tips and tricks, good times and the bad through this journey please feel free to reach out. Thanks!

    Ultimately you need to decide the best way for YOU to do this, but just a word of caution. Often people fall off the wagon because they choose a wagon that's too hard to stay on. So many people think they can't be patient, so they make all the changes all at once, lose weight fast in the beginning, then hit the wall and gain it all back.

    You don't have to give up carbs, or treats, or even whiskey. You can if you want, but all you really have to do is hit your calorie goal. You have a long journey ahead of you, so pick the easiest way to go while still hitting that calorie goal :smiley:

    Read the Most Helpful Posts threads pinned to the top of each board - lots of great info there.
    Focus on making small incremental improvements, and look for progress over time. Weekly and monthly, not day to day. Be patient and kind to yourself, good luck!

    @kimny72 has good words.

    My advice (for what it's worth) is to just start out by logging what you currently eat. Everything. The good, the bad, and the ugly. After a week or two of honest logging, take a critical look at your food diary. Find one thing you can give up without too much drama. Maybe it's one whiskey per day. Do that. Keep logging honestly. After the first change becomes second nature, look back over your diary again. What is another small sustainable change you can make? Maybe it's adding one vegetable a day. Do that until it's second nature. Rinse and repeat.

    Small, sustainable changes are the path to success. Huge, sweeping changes are very difficult, if not impossible, to maintain.

    You can do this! Good luck!

    There are plenty of tips. There are no tricks.

    If you want to be successful, you are not starting a "weight loss thing". You are starting to make changes.

    You refer to a 5-year old son and your teens, so my guess is you are still young. This is the start of something long-term. And you have a lot of time - even more if you get a hold of this in a healthy way. So, tips?

    1. Don't be in a hurry. Measure your progress over weeks and months - not days as @quiksylver296 says.
    2. Eat what you like, but measure and count.
    3. Related to #1, if you want to lose 2 pounds per week, don't start there. Get there over time.
    4. Don't "cut carbs, eat meat, cheese and veggies" and expect that alone to work. Learn about how to create a deficit and tailor that deficit to the foods you enjoy.
    5. Start to incorporate activity doing things you like. Start slowly! I can't emphasize that enough. There is no need to crash diet and go do cardio for 3 hours.
    6. About the "bad times through this journey"....if you have a bad day or bad decision, let it go and make the next day or decision a good one. Everybody does that.
    7. Refer to #1!
