Steps/Calories burned

So I have a question! Whenever I used to wear my fitness watch, walking 10,000 steps everyday would burn about 500 calories. I recently stopped using it and have just been relying on my iPhone to count my steps, but MFP doesn't count those steps as the same calorie burned ratio as my watch did. Was I really burning those calories from my watch information or am I just confused by MFP calories burned? Sorry this is so confusing!!

I would say the phone would be more accurate as I have heard that watches can count arm movements as walking. So you could be talking expressively (waving your arms) but standing still and it would count it as steps.
Unsure how true this but something I have heard.1
