Is it normal for quads for both legs and front knee to hurt during lunges? Am I supposed to feel it in my glutes because I don't feel anything at all in my glutes, only quads. I also find it hard to find how far my back leg should extend to form a right angle, any tips? Thanks.

Knees shouldn't hurt on any exercise. Downshift to stationary lunges for a while. This explains how to do them: https://youtube.com/watch?v=AMfbdugbcL8
You can check your form with a mirror at your side.. or use video.
