Do you have Dental Veneers? Would you do it again?

Hi Pals,

I hope this isn't a too personal question. However, in a place that can produce pages of comments about poop, i don't think it is. :laugh: :flowerforyou:

I'm getting older and my teeth are too.:frown: I've been thinking about Dental Veneers for years now, but couldn't afford it. Now, that i have the money, i'm afraid that i won't be happy with them. I don't want that look which i see on some actors, or rappers who must get rid of the Grill (Mouth full of gold) where it looks that they can't close their mouths.

Do you have Veneers? Do you know of a close relative or friend who's had them done? Are you/they happy? Will you do it again if you had the chance to reverse time?

Check out Lumineers, they don't required any grinding on your teeth and if you hate them you can always take them off. They might even have something better now.

I got them about 5 years ago. Mine were very expensive... $1000 per tooth. I just got the four front top ones done. I have great insurance, but since they are considered cosmetic, they were not covered. If you get them you need to be careful when eating hard things like apples, carrots, or nuts. You shouldn't chew ice or bite on a wrapper to open something --- all things we do sometimes without thinking.

One of mine has chipped (I don't know how it happened), and I need to get it replaced. I would get them again because they do really improve your appearance. Good luck:-)

Okay, I'm back on it. If you are doing those things still and will recommend, I think i can handle them. I'm currently on a site reading up on Lumineers. They seem like a great alternative. I haven't gotten to the price yet. lol

I'm glad to get some real life experience, thank you!


Update: Just read where it's $800 - $2000 per tooth for lumineers, depending on individual cases. As i looked at the Gallery, it seems that 6 - 10 Teeth is about the average when i look at the smile. I think i need about 8... I have a big smile...lol

Wow, Really? I was thinking more of Upper/Lower eyelid Surgery. SInce the morning i turned 45, i'm seeing every age spot and wrinkle... lol. I definitely don't want to see clearer.... just kidding. My eyesight is about the most youthful thing i have left. 20/20 :laugh:

HAHAHA! When I had Lasix done, I lost my reading vision, but I gained distance. I miss being able to read without glasses. I was about 45 when I had it done, and they told me that that would happen. I just didn't realize how much I would miss my close vision... but I do like to be able to drive without glasses. Regarding the wrinkles, I can't see them without my reading glasses, so maybe the Lasix was a good thing after all:-)

NO don't do them. I have dentists in the family. Save healthy teeth if you can!

I work in a dental office and I recommend Lumineers, Very durable, VERY pretty, not fake looking, and minimal damage to your teeth

My mom has them. She's a dental assistant and her current veneers are her second "set" (I'm not sure set is the correct word? But you know what I mean!). The first time she had them done was over 10 years ago and they were regular veneers, she now has lumineers. Lumineers are thinner and more natural looking usually. I think they look great and would like to get them myself someday when I have the money as my teeth are too small for my mouth and I'd like them to be made slightly bigger and of course whiter will be nice too!

I say go for it. Tell the dentist your concerns and that you want them to look good, but natural and he/she should be understanding and be able to give you what you want.

I wanted to get Veneers when I had to get the bonding replaced on my front teeth, from a biking accident (old & yellowing; was over 10 yrs old) but because I had a root canals of those teeth; I was told I could only get porcelain crowns. They look better than my old teeth but they feel too thick; if that makes sense. Any dentist getting that much money from your should give you a free consultation LOL My crowns cost $1800, for the two of them, BTW.

I have them and it is a love/hate relationship. I love my new smile and they look natural. Prior to having the veneers I had what dentist refer to as a "gummy smile", my teeth were small and I had large gums. My cousin who is a dentist wanted to start making veneers in his office (had been making the crowns for years) and offered to do mine for free if I would be his guinea pig but that I would have to have a gum lengthening procedure done first. My cousin lives in Virginia and I am in Alabama so I would have to have the gum lengthening procedure locally and fly to Virginia to have the veneers done. The gum procedure was $2,000 and I have to say that was the best money that I have ever spent in my life, I absolutely love the results from that. I now have normal size teeth and no longer all gums. The veneers I also love but I also hate them sometimes. I now have perfectly straight proportioned teeth that are whiter than my real teeth and for that I really like them. There is one tooth that is out of whack on the inside of my mouth and that drives me insane but because I live so far away I cannot have my cousin fix it (but on the exterior it is not visible). When I had them done my mouth was swollen and sore from the initial installation of them so it was not till I returned home to Alabama that I noticed this.

Pros: Love my new smile. Love the perfectly shaped teeth. LOVE LOVE LOVE that I got this all done for free (excluding gum lengthening.)

Cons: Always worrying that one will come off and not being close to my cousin for a repair. Not being able to eat foods like corn on the cob, apples, ribs, or pretty much anything without cutting into pieces and eating it with my back teeth. I ended up having to get 2 root canals right after having them done which is a common risk of getting them.

Would I do them if I had the chance over....Yep, in a heart beat.

I'm on my second set of veneers in 15-years, and honestly, if your teeth are healthy DO NOT DO IT. Veneers do not last a lifetime, even the best, most expensive ones that I have ($2,000/tooth). Your natural teeth are permanently damaged, it's costly financially and physically for the rest of your life, and truthfully even the "natural" looking veneers look fake. Veneers were my biggest regret EVER! I'd give anything to have my natural teeth and to have never done this foolishness. There are plenty of non-invasive procedures that can be done to improve your smile such as braces to straighten teeth, gum reshaping to get rid of a gummy smile or lengthen the teeth, or whitening to treat discoloration. Plus, it's less the cost and a much more healthier solution. Not to mention, your natural teeth best align -- veneers take time to adjust to your natural alignment and sometimes cause TMJ. There is nothing prettier and healthier than natural teeth. Beauty and vanity of your teeth is not worth risking the health of your teeth. Hopefully, you didn't go through with it! There will come a time when you will regret it... like your second set. Veneers only last 10-years and they look hideous over time (they tarnish, change and start receding at the gum line). Each time, the dentist has to shave more and more of your teeth... eventually you'll have hardly no tooth structure left and will need either implants or dentures. The costs of veneers is just an early installment payments towards dentures. DO NOT EVER DO IT!
