    How big of a range?

    Maybe this- quit trying for the halo and maybe the devil will quit showing up. Calculate a calorie target to lose 1 lb per week. Unless you are already dedicated to a rigorous exercise program, or have physically demanding job, leave activity out of the equation.

    Start a food diary, use a food scale, and log in everything no matter what. If you go over your number, even wildly over, keep logging your intake. Do this for a month and re-evaluate.

    And instead of doing what most people do, evaluate solely based on how many pounds you lost, evaluate your overall satisfaction. Meaning consider both how much you lost, and how satisfied you are with how you are living. Can you live like that long term?
