STRONGLY Craving sugar in the morning! Why?!

Each morning, I always wake up NEEDING sugar (which is weird because it never happened before I started counting my calories). I always end up grabbing kit kats (lots of them) or Cadbury chocolate sticks with my breakfast bumping up my clories to 7 or 8 hundred for breakfast! For the rest of the day though, I have really good self control and have no issue fighting cravings and so I don't exceed my calorie goal, so I guess it's not a problem, Im just wondering, why?! My goal is 1,350 a day by the way.

What do you typically eat for breakfast? Other than the candy.

If you don't normally include carbs like wholemeal toast, oats or other cereal in your breakfast, I'd suggest trying that. Even put a little jelly or honey on the toast or in your oats to satisfy the sweet craving.

I do to! Late at night I can resist the calling of whatever junk food is in the cupboard, but first thing in the morning all I want is sugar!

I want something nasty sweet first thing when I wake up every morning. Other than that time, I could care less about sweets.

We have chickens, so any sweet cravings I had for breakfast soon disappeared once we started gathering the egg mountain :)

I have to admit to having lost almost all of my sweet cravings now. No added sugar and almost no chocolate bars. I reserve my sweet hit for home making on my Up Days.

Seems to work now but took quite a while to realise it was real and, hopefully, permanent.

Are you on a low-carb diet? That usually does it for me. Also, when I workout (read, do a decent bit of cardio) then the sweet cravings tend to go down. Also, try adding some fruits to your diet to help with the cravings.

ETA: Whats your height and weight? Because 1350 seems low for somebody (guessing by your profile pic) is young. Checkout this thread to see if you are depriving yourself of calories which will cause cravings for food (which in turn you can think of as cravings for sweet)

Sugar cravings often indicate that you need protein. Try an egg or protein bar/shake?

Try some berries or other fruit. adding them to some plain yogurt can make a decent breakfast by itself. Also you may be a little dehydrated in the morning which can trigger the same impulses for cravings. Plus sugar is addictive and if you've cut back on it a lot you are probably getting some addiction response, especially now that you've made it a routine thing for your mornings.

Really? Why would sugar cravings indicate a need for protein?

They're not. I think she mistyped. They're sometimes an indication of lacking carbs.

It's something my nutritionist told me. When your body is needing protein, it often sends a signal that we interpret as a need for sugar/carbs. I was also corrected in my thinking that a craving for cookies and chips was carb craving, when it's actually fat craving. So for those types of cravings, I have half an avocado, or some almonds. Where i used to have a piece of fruit - which did not curb the cravings and I'd end up on a binge - adding proteins and mono unsaturated fats (MUFAs) has done more to kill off the sugar/carb/chip cravings than anything else I've done.

You have made it a habit to eat tons of sugar in the morning so of course you will crave it. 800 calories of junki for breakfast doesn't leave enough for healthy nutrition the rest of the day. The body requires NO sugar.

Sometimes when I feel really dehydrated and thirsty I'm actually craving carbs
