Question specific to myfitnesspal calculations

In the fitness goals for myfitnesspal, if I put in that I will exercise 3x a week as a goal, it gives a total of calories that would be burned if I exercised. If I enter that information, does it add it to my totals automatically? Or does it only add it in when I actually exercise?
Is it better to leave that goal at zero? Then just add exercise as I do it? My goal is to exercise 3x a week, but so far I haven't achieved that.

No, it doesn't. It's treated as a separate goal. Exercise is only factored in if you log it in your daily diary.1

It is just a goal for you to aim for and has no effect on the calories MFP gives you. Yo could tell it you plan to workout daily or not at all. Base calorie goal will be the same either way.
MFP will add calories to your day for exercise when you log the workout, but not until then. This is so you continue to lose weight whether you workout or not.0
