HELP! Whole foods/ vegan diet success?

Hi guys!
So I have a pretty serious question. My boyfriend has been experiencing pain in his joints, wrists and knees in particular. He also has verrrrry thin shins/calves... like there is no meat on his calves, and he used to be a soccer player. He had to end his soccer playing days because of horrible shin splints. He has been playing bass since he was about 12, and he's a professional musician now. I say this to note that he uses/bends/puts stress on/ his wrists a LOT. He just recently got a side job at Discount Tire and has complaining that his joints are hurting him even more. He is only 24, but does not live a healthy lifestyle as far as diet and exercise goes (no drinking or smoking, though).
My question is: I've watched a few vegan/whole foods documentaries that have me thoroughly convinced that switching up your diet and possibly removing meat, animal based foods, etc. from your diet can cure diseases like arthritis, diabetes, cancer. But I've only seen this on a documentary, never met anyone with a personal testimony like that so I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who can personally testify (or even on behalf of someone they know) who has switched their diets in such a way, and witnessed a chronic disease be rid from their lives.
Please respond to this/message me if you have advice. I am very concerned about him as he may be my husband someday! Anyhting helps!
