Kinesis workout

I'm on holiday right now and the gym here has these fancy Kinesis resistance cable machines. I have never heard of them before and I know most of the things you can do with it you can probably do with a barbell and some plates just as well, if not better but I am intrigued...
Anyone any thoughts on this?
