Are you trying to lose or gain? Weight loss or gain is not linear. You will have fluctuations based on water weight (sodium, muscles retaining water, hydration levels, hormones), and food in your system. If your trend was moving down then up and continues with time, then you are no longer in a deficit.2

A few months back I posted a write-up of a deep dive I did surrounding a two-day weight swing of +5.8 lbs followed by -8.8 lbs. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10672255/examination-of-outlying-scale-fluctuation#latest
TL;DR - if you're not weighing every day you're not getting the whole picture of your weight fluctuations, due to all the factors that Sardelsa covered above. Ultimately, scale weight is an imperfect measurement and very likely won't reflect linear sustained weight loss.2 -
I am doing it for weight loss. I weigh in once a week and have been since I have started dieting a year ago. I was always told since I did cardio you will not have muscle gain. I do not do weights at all0

weight loss isnt linear3 -
Consider this graph of my daily weight over the last year or so; there's so much noise in the data and I don't even have the same monthly hormonal effects with which to contend. It's worth noting I wasn't trying to lose weight for the entirety of this time period, but from 8/2017-2/2018 and 5/2018 to present that was my goal.
Weighing weekly you're only capturing a portion of the data and the variability in scale weight. The ten lbs you lost in the first three weeks wasn't 100% fat being exaggerated by water weight loss, the 3 lbs regain is that normalizing. Have trust in the process that if you're truly consistently in a calorie deficit you will lose fat over time.3 -

You have other stuff in your body than just fat, and all of it makes up your scale weight. That other stuff fluctuates all the time (especially water and stomach & intestine contents) due to normal body functioning. I can easily weigh 2 or 3 lbs more the morning after a heavy meal that is still digesting, or a stressful workout that has me retaining water. You have to look at trends over the long term, not just one week, to see if what you're doing is working. You can do everything perfectly (which FYI no one actually does) and still have a week or two here or there where you gain.1 -
Well I hope you guys are right. I weighed in again this week and gained another three pounds. If I am in a deficit for calories and right on for the carbs and fat, cardio 6-7 days a week and I cheat once a week which I have been doing for the last year and still hit two weight goals; why is this happening... I don't think im building muscles just doing cardio (treadmill)0

with so little to lose you should be aiming to lose 0.5lbs/week anyway, so you are ahead of the game with 4 in 5... 0.75/week2 -
