Why don't I get any calories for steps?

If I log walks my calories are counted, but if I just walk around a lot in a day without hitting exercise on my apple watch, then I don't get any exercise calories. Not even if I hit 10,000 steps for the day, and I have my activity set to the lowest setting. Help!

Maybe it is not syncing. Check your reports to see if your step count is listed.1

The steps are listed, I just don’t get calorie credit. Only for the actual times I choose exercise on my watch.0
