I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthrisits in my spine. Been a very painful few months. I've since joined a gym and have been doing a hour a day on the elliptical. I feel good after and it doesn't hurt while doing it (doctor told me it would not harm me to do it). I want to expand at the gym but I'm very nervous about hurting myself. Any ideas on what I can do at the gym to strengthen my core which would minimize my pain (it cant be anything that strains my back/spine)?

Thanks!

Talk to a physical therapist. They'd be able to give you a much better answer than any of us.

Talk to your dr and a good physical therapist. Even if the therapist advises something, still double check with your dr. The usual recommendations for ostearthritis are swimming and pilates, assuming you can get a really good instructor. While you do need strength training, do not attempt things at the gym on your own, you need a program discussed first with your dr.

I have osteo, undifferentiated spondylitis, a couple of herniated discs and spinal stenosis. Talk to your doc, but mine tells me that only really strenuous things would do damage and it's okay to push through some pain. Doing that and getting stronger leads to less pain. But check with your doc.
