I think depending on your mood and progress it can have either a positive or negative affect

It depends on who you follow, and whether or not you realize and can accept that a lot of their photos don’t reflect real life. They’re carefully posed, done under optimal lighting, and often heavily filtered/retouched. It can be a real downer to compare yourself to somebody when the playing field isn’t level like that.

There was a good link in another thread to an interview with an Instagram model, where she described how phony the whole thing was and how she got sucked into the whole process just for the likes/followers/popularity. I’ll see if I can dig it up.

[ETA:] The link is here - good read: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-life/11980031/Instagram-confession-The-ugly-truth-behind-my-perfect-model-shots.html

I have an Instagram account strictly dedicated to weightloss/fitness. Moreso to track my progress than anything. I only follow fitness accounts of "real people" or motivation quotes. I'll look at it to get motivation about going to the gym, and to "psych" myself up. lol Whatever works right?

I have a fitness insta I use to keep me motivated and inspired. I like to follow real people. I've recently been out of the game for a year and a half due to other demands on my time, but I have reached a breaking point and I need to get back into it.

I've never scrolled through Instagram for that purpose and I don't really follow anyone except my sister to stay up to date about her travels (she travels a lot). I don't find carefully tailored to sell photos all that motivating. Even "real" people and people I respect carefully tailor. In fact, I was listening to a podcast lately where Mike Israetel said many, including him, would take pictures post prep and trickle them throughout the year). I sometimes scroll through physiqonomics's feed because I think he's funny and maybe glance at a page when someone mentions it and I get curious, but that's about it.

I understand many people are motivated by this. There isn't anything wrong with that as long as you know they're always looking at the best of someone, not real life. Even the posts that show their "bad" days are carefully thought out. I just don't think this stuff is for me because my brain is wired a little bit differently (I don't find motivational quotes motivating if that gives you an idea what I mean).
