Is it bad to eat too much protein?

Hi everybody.... so according to fitness pal I am allowed 1763 calories....I’ve been only consuming on average 1200-1500 a day and I’m always over my protein suggestion. Im 5’05 and 125. I just wanna lose the flab and gain muscle. I’m new to this app and just trying to figure everything out. Lol.

How much over?
Excessive protein can possibly affect your kidneys, but it has to be A LOT of protein.6 -

how much are you eating?
unless its like 400g of protein, its doubtful that you're eating too much.7 -
About 100 on average. The app says 88 is what I should be eating. Ok so I guess it’ll be ok. Lol. Thanks for your reply!1

100 gms is not too much for your weight -it's more like a minimum - more is fine especially since you are cutting weight2 -
How much do you consider too much? Unless you have a medical condition, then no.1

100 gms is not too much for your weight -it's more like a minimum - more is fine especially since you are cutting weight
Is OP on a cut? This is weight gain forum and she is trying to produce muscle.
Many people here follow the default minimum requirements and not what is optimal for their goal(s) and individual needs. I would actually bump it up to 130-135g since you are female and this generally will mean you have less testosterone for muscle synthesis. Couple that with adequate muscle stimulas and you will get better results.2 -

If the OP is trying to lose flab, I would also bring into the equation exercise. What is the OP following and I would there is some sort of resistance training.0

I do not think it is ever possible to eat "to much" protein on a normal diet (whatever "too much" protein means).
My daily protein goal is 40% on 1850 cal/day 720 cals or 180g/P/day but I generally average only 32% or 148gP/day.
At age 67 and 152#, that is NOT too much protein for me by any means.2 -
It can effect your Blood Urea Nitrogen levels which in turn can effect your kidney's3

Maybe at chronic superhuman intakes.
Unless one is eating 400-500g of protein on a daily basis, which most normal healthy humans aren’t going to do, there’s nothing to worry about.7 -
The safest way is to honestly get it tested if your at all worried rather then taking advice from some one online that is not a doctor.4

Fortunately for you, you have nothing to worry about. Because that's not how cancer happens at all.
But if you have any peer-reviewed research which causally links protein intake to cancer, I'd sure like to see it.7 -

And think saying it's just their opinion makes it okay. I have to assume people who do that don't actually know anyone who has fought cancer, either as a researcher, an oncologist, or a patient.
OP, the MFP default protein goal is actually relatively low, so I wouldn't worry about going a bit over, especially on lower calories. It would be a concern if your protein consumption crowds out other macros/nutrients you need, and if you have any kidney issues, conditions that could contribute to kidney issues or some other medical concern, check with your doctor. I would add, if MFP is giving you 1700 calories, eat them, just make sure you are logging accurately :drinker:3 -

Yah I get it I m no doctor and yes I have family members who've died of cancer. I come from a hispanic background with poor diet and a lot meat consumptions. We tend to eat a high amount of protein through the coarse of our life chorizo, eggs, carne asada, pork, along with that the regular American diet fast food chains. So hey you know what one thing that I have learned through my course of life is that "To much of something is a bad thing"! there has to be some sort of balance. If you're going to offer advice that "It's bad to eat too much protein", you should qualify what "too much" is.
You also may want to do some research on who Valter Longo is (the 'researcher' from your livescience.com link), and the diet he sells/advocates. WHO has linked excessive consumption of cured meats as a cancer risk but that has nothing to do with their protein content (cured meats tend to be lower in protein for the calories anyway). As far as I know there are no other reputable groups that have a more extreme anti-protein/meat stance than WHO on this issue.
Unless a doctor has specifically told you to avoid too much protein because of a specific health issue, you're fine.5 -

So can i ask something... Is your family largely over weight and sedentary?
Cancer is in my family, so i have to be more active in being healthy and screening for it.
Cancers are largely genetic but can more likely in unhealthy individuals. I have seen loose causality with protein consumption, but more so when consuming large amounts of processed foods.4 -
OP - unless you have diagnosed kidney issues, I wouldn't worry about too much protein, especially at 100g/day. All that will happen if you have more than your body needs is that the amino acid skeletons will be metabolised to glucose and burned for energy, rather than used for muscle growth/repair/enzyme synthesis etc. Although there will be increased urea disposal in this situation from the metabolised NH groups, it shouldn't be problematic unless your kidneys are already malfunctioning somehow.2

Cancers are largely genetic but can more likely in unhealthy individuals. I have seen loose causality with protein consumption, but more so when consuming large amounts of processed foods.
I think the processed foods/protein/cancer thing tends to be linked to chargrilled red meats, which contain compounds which are carcinogenic when metabolised in the liver, and nitrates (again, some evidence they can be detrimental to health when consumed regularly). It's not necessarily the protein itself, but the things that go alongside certain protein sources.2 -
Man if only these 250lbs bodybuilders would stop dying from heart failure prematurely around their 30s-40s we would like totally know for sure given many consume like 400+ grams protein/day (sarcasm)1
