Working on my lifestyle change....

I am now a year into my lifestyle change and down 50 pounds. Being not quite 1/2 way there, I still have a way to go to hit my goal, but this marks a huge milestone for me. Hopefully by this time next year I will be there. I recently joined the rec center to assist with this goal. So, keeping that in mind, let me tell you about my morning.

So the alarm goes off at 4:30 (yes AM). Feeling like I just closed my eyes, I really did not want to get up. However, remembering my vow to myself, I pull myself out of bed. I get everything ready to go, and climb in the car. I drive over to the rec center, arriving a few minutes early before they open. The building itself is 3 stories. When you come in, you are on the 2nd floor. Downstairs is the lockers, the pool, the courts, circuit and free weights. Upstairs is the track and the bikes. So I go inside all pumped up and ready to go with the notion of doing a spin class this morning for the very first time. I get downstairs to the locker area and get everything locked up and remember, oh yeah there’s a combination to the stairwell to get upstairs to the 3rd floor where the spin classes are held. I go back up the stairs to the main floor and get the code from the ladies at the front desk. I turn to go down the hall to go up to the third-floor, being as I’m now on the second floor, and the lady behind the desk says oh no you have to go through the back stairway. OK so I go back downstairs, and go all the way down to the back hallway and go up the stairs to the third-floor.

By now my blood is pumping, and I’m still a few minutes early for the class. So I figure I’ll do a lap or two around the track. Coming around the second time to where the spin classes are, people are starting to show up. So I find the instructor, introduce myself, let her know this is the first time I’ve ever done anything remotely close to a spin class. So she starts showing me the bike. We get it all adjusted for me, and I start going. Others are coming into join the class getting set up and ready to go. Pretty soon she starts the music, and we start going with the class. This isn't too bad. Then she tells us to start adding tension to the bike. OK, now it’s starting to get a little bit uncomfortable (who am I kidding a whole lot). Increasing tension, to simulate going uphill and sitting on that hard seat that feels the equivalent of sitting on the size, shape and hardness of a brick which is also pressing so hard into my pelvic that it feels like it’s going to end up in my stomach, all while my legs are on fire. Keep in mind this class goes for an hour. I look at the clock and IT’S BEEN 10 MINUTES!!! By now, I fully believe that. I. Am. Going. To. DIE! I am starting to judge how noticeable it would be if I just slide off my bike and sneak out the door.

By some grace of God I made it to the 30 minute mark. The instructor looks over at me and said since your brand new at this I’d suggest you stop at the end of phase 1 which is after this next song (phase 1...good Lord, it gets even harder???). She goes on to say, then do this a couple more times before you build up to the higher phases (yeah right). I'm like OK one more song. I can do this and then I even have permission to leave. YES! (I am mentally fist bumping myself now)

The song ends I get off the bike and grab my stuff. Waving to everyone in the class and saying goodbye, and then turning, I politely thank the instructor for killing me. By this point my legs feel like Jell-O. I proceeded to walk over to the door. I open it, and then it hits me like a freight train. I have to walk back down 2 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS!!! I must’ve stood at the top of the stairs for five minutes contemplating if I could just slide down the railing. Shrugging that idea off so I don’t break my neck (I do still have to go to work today), I go one step at a time feeling like an 80 year old woman. I swear whoever designed this layout had some sick cruel joke in mind when they designed it.

Zumba class is tonight. I will let you know how that one goes. At least I have done that before so I know what I am getting myself into.

Thanks for reading this! And have a great day!

Wow, you described that so well that my legs were feeling like jello, and I was only reading about it. And your dedication is impressive. Zumba is out of the question for me, because I am very clumsy and by the time I get the first moves, they have moved on. Looking forward to reading about your experience. Good luck!!
