If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin at home or in the gym? Is Zwift your thing? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.

There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.

Let's tackle September!

(BTW - Thanks to @CricketKate for starting all this back in 2012)

I took a peek at your August thread, and it looks like I could set up something like:

    Stationary Cycling Distance (miles): 0.0
    Stationary Cycling Time (min): 0.0
Elliptical Distance (laps or gotta check if readout is in miles or km): 0.0
    Elliptical Time: 0.0
    Walking Exergame Distance (miles): 0.0
    Walking Exergame Time (min): 0.0
    ============================
(BFF JUST moved into new home 1 km away, so will be doing more of these regularly in the future)
    Walking Outdoors Distance (km): 0.0
    Walking Outdoors Time (min): 0.0
    * Outdoor Cycling Distance (km)*: 0.0
    * Outdoor Cycling Time (min)*: 0.0
    * once bike gets out of basement / flat tire changed / probably oiled and tuned up .....

If that kinda thing is still within your Challenge Parameters, I'm in ... this will be good for weaning myself off 100% exergame walking. I need to diversify, and also want to try other programs than Manual and Random on my stationary bike, like HIIT and Hills.

Assuming you say "Yup, that's a go!" .... then once I get myself a baseline average for the stationary bike and elliptical distances, I can set some targets.

    What's "Zwift" ???

You can set up the way you record your cycling any way you want. :) And yes, stationary bikes are included!

Zwift is an online program that allows you to "ride" with people from all over the world when you're on your trainer. Great for keeping in shape during the winter.

Im new here. Can I just jump in and introduce myself?

I am a recreational bike rider in San Diego, California. I try to do at least 100 miles per week, more in the spring- summer but I kind of fell off the wagon 2 months ago. I was getting up to 120 to 140 miles most weeks in March to June, but I had 5 back to back trips July and August, so I was gone 30 out of 60 days. Then when the dust settled, the heat arrived. I dont do well when it gets up to the 90's and we had a ten day stretch when, if it wasn't over 100, it was in the 90's and very humid.

Anyway, my birthday is in the middle of November. There is a very easy century ride in Palm Desert (2.5 hour away) and depending on the calendar, it is usually 2 or 3 days before I turn another year. Ive done it several years and 2017 was especially sweet as I used it to celebrate my 65th B-D after 3 or 4 years of not doing it. I decided to do it again this year. I have 10 weeks to prepare. A year ago I started my prep 8 weeks before, so here I go.

    Sunday 08/26/2018- 16 miles
Monday 08/37/2018- 16 miles. Just trying to get my legs back.
    Wednesday 08/29/2018 - 21 miles.
    Thursday 08/30/2018 - 16 miles
    Saturday 09/01/2018 -22 miles
Monday 09/03/2018 -22 miles. Kicking the intensity up a bit.
Tuesday 09/04/2018 - 21 miles. 5 laps around a man made island. One way road with no traffic lights, stops signs or intersections. Time trial mode.

I am self employed so I set my own schedule. I have 3 routes I do repeatedly with very little traffic and I do it as soon as the sun comes out on an empty stomach. I just put in gear and go as hard as I can that day. I think of my time on the bike not as going on a bike "ride" but more like doing a bike "workout"

I normally ride 4 days a week and do weights at the gym in my "off bike" days. For the next 10 weeks, however, I will try to ride 5 mornings a week and go to the gym the other 2 or if we get any adverse weather.

My Garmin Edge is quirky. I will charge it and then when I disconnect it will turn itself on. Most of the time I notice it and turn it off, but apparently not last night. I guess it was on all night. Got on the bike at 6:45 AM. 5 minutes later the Garmin shuts down. Battery dead. Ride was my stock 22.5 miles, so I marked the time I ended and subtracted form the 6:45 start.

    09/06/2018 On the bike: 22.50 miles 1:25:00.

2018.09.07 Friday. My lucky day. 20.7 miles. 1:12:28. 17.1 MPH average. 1467 calories per Garmin (Yeah, sure~ I don't trust it).

Getting my legs back. Still off my previous cruising speed, but much better than when I got back on the bike 2 weeks ago.

My Garmin edge 520 yet again failed to work. Today it is just showed zig zag lines across the screen. So it wasn't the battery. I keep my old G-E 500 with my bike gear as a back up so I used it instead. But I hate it when I buy stuff and it doesn't work. I've had it for more than 6 or 7 years. Maybe it is time to put it to sleep.

Why my lucky day: Now I get to go out and buy a new one. I love buying bike stuff. Any one here uses or knows anything about the Garmin Edge Explorer? Its only $249.00 US Dollars everywhere, including my local bike shop. I think I will just drive by and pick one up before my next ride on Sunday.

2018.09.08 Saturday: At the gym. 45 +/- minutes of triceps exercises and 35 minutes on the elliptical. Top resistance level on the Precor AMT is 20. Got there after 20 minutes and sustained level 20 for the last 15 minutes. Felt really good afterward.

2018.09.09 Sunday: On the bike. Only two weeks into my program, right back to where I left off 2.5 months ago. 37.2 miles this morning. 2:14:50, 16.5 MPH.

5 bike workouts, 2 gym sessions this week. Garmin says 123.61 miles, 7:35:28 hours, 7,132 calories for the week, not counting the gym sessions.

Got 9 more weeks before the century I registered for. Great if i could drop the extra 10 lbs I went up this summer.

Had the hardest, most stressful (and slowest!) 100km ride I've ever done. Decided to explore a completely new area for me so plotted a route and took the bike on the car to Ashdown Forrest in Kent (southern England)

Managed to leave my phone/wallet at home so had to commit to riding a long route in countryside I didn't know at all with no backup navigation, credit cards or way to call for help in case of something going wrong.
My Garmin of course decided this was the day to go bonkers and try to send me back to the start after 15 miles and then try to send me off course, turn left when I needed right and even invented road junctions that didn't exist. The whole ride was a series of beeps and instructions to U turn. Did manage to trace the thin blue line all the way with a few little mistakes.

Really challenging ride with tiny narrow roads, very short sight lines giving little warning of approaching traffic, poor road surfaces, constant changes of elevation with no periods of easy flat rides to relax and some serious climbs. Beautiful countryside though - when I could take my eyes off the road and the Garmin screen!
5371 ft of elevation in 64 miles.

!97 miles so far for the month including 152 for the week.

One more hard training week and then I taper for a hilly closed roads Century (Velo South).

Ok, rarely post on here but cycling is my only form of exercise and love it, so might as well try and keep up on this.
Was planning to go out today but I wont go out in winds of over 18mph, which they were here (N E England) and tbh I'm gutted. Sitting here on the computer and I feel fat and lazy and wished I had just done it. I am on another cycling forum that has peoples pictures of all their rides in the wind today and really just need to get out, which I really enjoy when I do.

So, so far in September I have done 57 miles (1 commute to work and 1 weekend ride) but hope to get up to 200-250 miles for the month which seems to be my average...
