It does sorta work counter to the way MFP is designed (i.e. eating at the same level every day vs. eating back exercise calories each day) but it is good information regardless and gives folks who want to keep things very simple a guide for doing so.0 -

Rather than sticky threads to other approaches, I think it would be nice for MFP to write a very short post to sticky about how MFP as it is designed to work will result in a very similar calorie intake as the other versions floating around on the boards (IPOARM, TDEE-%) Some people love the approaches and it speaks to them, but I think others get confused by all the numbers and terms.
Highlights:
*MFP's recommended setting is -1 lb a week for most people, not -2 lbs. Some people may need to set higher or lower based on individual needs.
*Follow the activity level descriptions prior to exercise when setting up your profile. Eat back your exercise calories for activities not included in the activity level setting. (Sedentary = desk job and normal life activities such as washing dishes. Sedentary + exercise calories would be desk job, normal life activities, and then an exercise like a 30 minute walk, a bike ride, etc.)
If you are not eating back exercise calories, you are not using MFP as it is designed. MFP's program is great and simple. It works with what you really do, not with what you plan to do. If you set your weight loss to 2 lbs a week but don't feel like it is sustainable, attainable, or healthy, you are not following MFP as it is designed. Change it to 1 lb a week or .5 lb a week and see how you feel.
(If you don't want to deal with tracking exercise calories or exercise, just include your expected exercise in your activity level setting and eat that amount. Just don't complain that MFP won't let you eat enough because you underestimated your activity level or you set it properly but don't eat your exercise calories back.)0
