Daily cardio calorie burn?

I was curious if you have cardio calorie burn goals when you work out? My trainer told me I should be doing 500-800 worth of calories when on the elliptical, etc and I was just curious what other people shoot for. I'm usually pretty content with a 30 minute/300 calorie burn. Thank you!

I'm a runner, so my daily distance is determined by my training plan. I'm at about 40 mpw right now, so about an hour a day plus a longer run once a week. I also walk the dog 2-3 miles a day and do some yoga and calisthenics, mostly to stretch out stiff muscles.1

500-800 calories is a bit ridiculous for every day. I'd say you're better where you're at.8

I train to meet certain athletic goals, not to a certain number of calories.
That said, 500-800 sounds pretty high. What was the trainer's justification for this?5 -

When I go in for training I do a half hour of strength training and then my 30-45 minutes of cardio (depending on what time I get there). On Mondays and Wednesdays I coach soccer practice for U15 girls and run around with them for 90 minutes and most Tuesdays and Thursdays (gym days), AFTER the gym, I drop my daughter off at her other soccer practice and do like 4 miles worth of walking/jogging (I'd LOVE to run, I'm working on it!). Weekends I try and do at least 30 minutes of yoga and maybe a 30 minute cardio video... plus between errands, cleaning, soccer games, yardwork, etc I'm pretty much always moving.
I'm definitely making progress with weight, body fat and inches lost.... so I didn't really see an issue with my current routine.
I'm WAY more active than I was 6 months ago!

Yeah. I'd say you're good!3 -
I ride my bike most days after work. I used to commute by bike but the company moved too far north for that given what time I get here. I'll ride 5 or 6 days in a typical week. Usually one long ride (3 to 4 hours) on the weekend because that's when I have time for it, and an hour to an hour and a half on week days, depending on my schedule. Last night I only burned 500 calories on the bike.1

I like to try to burn 350 to 650 calories a day with cardio.1

I have "chapter" goals when I do cardio (I listen to audiobooks while running or walking), so basically it's simple slightly varying time goals, not calories goals. I personally wouldn't do 500-800 every day - that seems like an excessive thing to do every day for me and no way in hell I would want to walk 3 hours every single walking day. I would burn that much on the occasional hike, or a particularly long "chapter" run, but my daily average is about 350 otherwise.
I also have some weeks where I exercise less on purpose in order not to burn out. For example, I have picked a book for this month that has shorter chapters (called Off to be the wizard, only 5-45 minutes per chapter).
Most people here exercise mainly for athletic goals, so that's their focus. I exercise for calories, but my exercise doesn't have calorie goals if that makes sense. I feel having a specific calories target for the day would make it a chore, not the thing I look forward to doing every day to find out what happened next in the book.3 -

Eek! That would take me 90-120 mins at least. No thank you.
Honestly I don’t aim to burn a certain amount of calories. I usually have a time or distance goal.3 -

Do they mean to try to actually burn that many calories or just to try to reach that on the readout on the machine? The machines generally over estimate calorie burn so they may be suggesting that just to make sure you're exerting yourself enough.
Given your follow-up post listing all your activity I'd say you're doing just fine!
I keep track of the calorie readout on the cardio machines only so that I can push myself harder next time I'm on that certain machine and beat the last number. I don't take them for an accurate calorie burn at all.2 -

Yeah they mean I should work until the machine is giving me the numbers in there somewhere... which would be a minimum of an hour to hit the low end (as per the machine)0 -
Side note: I need a step tracker/fitness tracker that has the heart rate monitor in it. My watch always tells me I burned a crazy amount of calories in a day and I don't trust it LOL0

I burn about 550 cals/day rowing a total of 50 mins/day @ home which I do in 4 intervals of 15-30 mins each depending on how hard or fast I want to work.
Doesn't matter how long it takes because I'm doing it at home and can do the intervals any time day or night.1 -
Calorie loss is a nice side benefit of exercising but is usually not the primary focus of a fitness program. A good balanced program will include a blend of strength, HIIT and cardio based on your goals. Some days you will end up burning more than others but it's all important and good.0

Since I use MFP's calorie goal I eat my exercise calories, so I'm content with 30 minutes on the elliptical which gives me an extra 250 and gets my cardio needs met.1

Makes sense, thank you. As you build up stamina you can increase the resistance and/or incline on the machine to increase the calorie burn number. It's just a way to track your progress and make you push yourself.0 -

What does your watch say that you consider crazy? Is it counting all calories including BMR for the day or just exercise?
For example my Fitbit is estimating 1348 calories burned from midnight till 2:52pm. Even if I do nothing the rest of the day, my calorie burn will continue to increase. Why? Because Fitbit adds 14 calories every 15 mins to my calorie burn to account for my BMR. The reason I am mentioning this is because your watch might do something similar.0 -

Makes sense to me as well. Calories are a yardstick for effort. I do wonder about the accuracy of some of the machines. The treadmill seems to be the most believable but still a little high. An incline of 7.5 degrees and speed of 4.7 mph keeps my HR at about 150 and the machine reads just over 300 in 30 minutes. drop the incline and/or speed and it will take me longer to hit the calories number. This machine (at PF) also shows watts, which supposedly makes machines more accurate. But if I switch to the elliptical it's apples to oranges; it definitely gives higher numbers for similar effort.1 -
Most of my bike workouts inside are focused on some sort of training goal based off of my FTP (functional threshold power). My goal, right now, is to increase my base level of (cycling) fitness going into 2019. For the next two weeks 2/3 of my workouts will end in me burning anywhere from 450-475 calories in an hour. the 90 min ones (we'll see if I have the wherewithal for those) are in the 600-700 calorie range. Running, when I do it, is based off of distance and rowing is really technique based right now.0

I will have to look into that!! Thank you!

I usually do the elliptical on a lower level, like 7 (the machines are 1-22) average speed of probably 4.6mph with some peaks and it says I burn roughly 10 calories a minute. HR is usually 155-1650

Forgot to mention the machines I use have the integrated HR monitors using the grips. I guess most do these days.1 -
Using a zero-impact cardio machine in my living room, I burn 1000+ calories in an hour.
It has a little computer that measures my speed and infers a calorie burn. I just log it and then not eat all the calories it awards me.2
