FAI, Labral Tear, and Squats

Hey there. I'm primarily a runner, but suffered a pretty bummer of an injury during a half marathon a few weeks ago. The idea of weight training is something I've flirted with since becoming active on MFP two years ago, but because of FAI and a labral tear, I definitely need to take it more seriously in order to be able to continue running. I start PT today and will likely be in PT for quite some time, but I'm hoping to hear from other lifters or runners who lift about how they have managed FAI and a labral tear, especially when it comes to squats.
I'll be working with PT on form, etc, but right now squatting is off limits and it also definitely aggravates everything. While I think the acute injury/pain/discomfort is definitely starting to subside, there's some long term work I have to put into this to avoid surgery. The doctor indicated I can pretty much do whatever I want (once I finish PT) as long as I am asymptomatic. So, obviously doing a progressive lifting program would require squats which as of today definitely cause me to NOT be asymptomatic.
Part of me is just having a whinefest because the whole thing bums me out, but I'm also looking for real live people who live with FAI/labral tear and have remained active with strength training and/or running without having surgery.
