Hi, my husband had a heart attack and stroke recently. He needs to add on 30lbs. He has to be on a low sodium and kidney friendly diet (low on potassium/phosphorus. He hates fish.
He has tried those protein supplement shakes like Ensure and Nepro but he gets an upset stomach with those.
Is there powder or snacks or bars that are weight gaining. Please help!!
Thanks,
Dawn

To gain weight, he just needs to eat more calories. I hesitate to suggest anything more specific than that due to his health conditions. Can he be referred to a registered dietitian?1

Have you tried hydrolyzed collagen? It's essentially amino acids and a really healthy form of protein. You can easily add it to soups or drinks without really changing the taste a lot and I've never had any problems with the stomach (can't say the same for milk protein). If you decide to get it go for the grass fed version
This is obviously just a small part in gaining weight as you will not just eat protein all day but anything counts right?5 -

He needs to ADD on 30lbs because of a heart attack and stroke? You usually hear the opposite of this. How much underweight is he, if you don't mind answering. Do you have a list of things he can't have based on medical advice? I would think that a "kidney friendly" diet would be light on protein if he's having issues. I don't think there is any real advice this board could safely give you - he needs to see a medical professional because of potential complications.3 -
