I'm an archaeologist (in the making) and for the next 6 weeks I'll be away digging. 6 days a week 9-5 hard labour. I've searched through the database for an equivalent exercise but the closest I can find is shovelling snow

So obviously this means I should get a HRM. However, I want one that counts calories but without the use of a chest strap as it would really bother me whilst digging. Do these exist? Sorry for this post since ive already seen a good few people posting about this.

I have a Polar FT 7 and it does it all. However, it has a chest strap, but it has NEVER bothered me at all. It is snug but not too tight and "gives" very easily when you are moving. I sometimes wear it to work (tho, I don't dig in the dirt  ) and it doesn't bother me at all.
Why do you think that the chest strap will get in the way? It really is no different than a bra line.

I just assumed that with digging it would get in the way but have no idea as I've never used one. I've just ordered a polar F6 (if I remember rightly) so hopefully that'll do the trick!

An HRM is a useful tool for focusing your workouts and has some value in estimating calories expended under certain conditions. If you are only buying an HRM for estimating calories on your architectural dig, it is not worth the money as the results will not be accurate.

OTOH, if you decide to keep it, you will have a good HRM to use for your workouts when you get back!
