How many steps in a mile?

Options
My step tracker is telling me there are 2670 steps in one mile for me. Everywhere I research says 1700-2200....doesn’t 2670 sound high for a mile, even for someone short?

Depends on how short and what your stride length is, I should think. I'm 5'1" and it's about 2500 steps in a mile for me according to my Fitbit.

They used to say a mile was 2,000 steps. Thats why the 10,000 steps is approximately 5 miles a day. However, everyone is not the same height or has the same size stride. So of you are smaller and have a smaller stride it may take you more steps to reach a mile. I wouldn't be overly concerned though, any activity is good activity. If you really want to know couldn't you use an app on your phone to track using your GPS to see if you walk a mile how many steps it actually is? I think that would probably be more accurate.

Sorry, maybe I got a little off track there. I'm fascinated by weird stuff.

Anyway, for me it's 1,700 to 1,800 steps depending on the day. I'm 6'1" and male.

I am an old, short (5'3 1/2") woman & it takes about 12,050 steps for 5 miles on my Fitbit, so about 2,410 steps to a mile for me.

I am 4'11 and according to my pedometer, I am around 2330 steps a mile. I must have a larger stride than other shorties here, that or there is inaccuracy with my settings!

Thanks everyone, I suppose it does really vary. The reason I asked is because I like to track my activity in miles, not steps. So I generally aim for 5 miles a day, but it takes me 13,350 steps to reach that!! It just sounded like a ton...I was thinking 13,350 steps would be close to 6.5-7 miles. I guess I was using the old 2000 steps formula...hmmmm

Try some different apps; a few of them count steps from the gyro and distance from the gps so you can cross check. I usually don't bother converting. If I look at steps (I track them every day with Pacer on my phone, not linked to mfp), it's only because I did something where they will be way above normal. Then I subtract 6000 (I would subtract more if I didn't have my base calories set pretty low) double it and take hundreds as calories. Example - 12345 - 6000 = 6345. Doubled is 12690. Hundreds is 126. I log that many calories. Exact? No. It's reasonably close to 50 calories per mile, which is about right. And I do it in my head in far less time than it took to explain it.

For me it depends on whether I'm walking or running. I take longer strides when running, so fewer steps per mile. Wandering around the house, I take small steps, so it takes a lot of steps to make a mile. Walking the dog, it depends on how often he stops and whether I'm walking on the street or on a rocky rooty trail.

Depends on your activity and stride length. On my usual run, I cover five miles yet log fewer than 10k steps. If I’m walking on a steep hill and take smaller steps, then I’ll log fewer steps per mile than I would on a flat surface. That’s one reason why step counting isn’t a good measuring tool for everyone.
