What Halloween Means to Me

When I was a Marine, I was lucky enough to to be stationed within 200 miles miles of my family for about 2 years. I would head home on the weekends and, as I made more Marine friends, they would sometimes accompany me to my parents' home. My family was poor, but my Mother and Father always fed those Marines and welcomed them into their home. My Mom died 8 years ago, but she told me before she passed that sometimes me and my Marine buddies ate all the groceries and left them to struggle during the following week. I asked her why she never told us. That we would have chipped in. She told me " I always hoped that if you were stationed far away, someone would do the same for you."

She was born on Halloween. She would have been 84 today. Happy Birthday, Mom. I.O.U.
