If you're skinny fat, then losing more weight might not be the solution. People often find that starting a lifting program helps with this issue.
But yeah, keto works for you if you like that way of eating. It's not magic, it is just a method of calorie control.8 -
If you're skinny-fat, then this might be right for you:
That being said, what made you want to try keto? In other words - what are your goals, and how would you see keto fit them?17 -
If you are skinny fat you have a lot of options
1.) work out more and maybe eat some more protein -> more muscles
2.) if you want to lose fat that might happen automatically by working out or you could reduce your calories
3.) even without reducing total calories you could try to shift your macros from carbs/fat to protein
4.) if you want the fat to go away fast and can handle to go very low with your carbs, keto might work for you. Be aware keto is not a high protein diet but a low to medium protein diet.
5.) ...14 -
I'd look into recomp. Check out the recomp thread by usmcrp.
As for what you eat--that's your choice. Skinny fat comes from weightloss without exercise, or the right kind of exercise.4 -
To build muscles most have the best success with higher protein and carbs rather than high fat. Keto may not be the best option for you unless you really love that style of eating and will easily be able to stay within your calorie goals eating that type of food.3

Training effectively is the way to fix being skinny fat and keto is probably the least effective diet to support high intensity training. It can be done on keto of course but it's unlikely to be optimal.
It also doesn't lead to a better rate of body fat loss compared to other diets when calories and protein are held constant.
If there are other factors that push you towards keto then it could be a good choice for you but it could also be an bad choice. You haven't given any info as to why you are considering it beyond saying you are skinny fat - if that's the only reason then don't do it, there's no need to massively restrict a whole macro-nutrient to resolve your issue.

Reducing carbs or going keto has no metabolic advantage for fat loss. After the initial water weight drop, keto doesn't cause weight loss/ fat loss any more effectively or any faster than any other form of calorie restriction. This is clearly demonstrated in the meta-analysis of 32 high quality studies where calories and protein were held constant. Interestingly, low fat diets showed a slight advantage.
"While low-carbohydrate diets have been suggested to partially subvert these processes by increasing energy expenditure and promoting fat loss, our meta-analysis of 32 controlled feeding studies with isocaloric substitution of carbohydrate for fat found that both energy expenditure (26 kcal/d; P <.0001) and fat loss (16 g/d; P <.0001) were greater with lower fat diets."

So, shiting macros or going keto has not direct effect on fat loss or speed. If it helps someone with compliance and preference, fine. But there is no advantage for fat loss.
OP, it really comes down to preference and compliance. If that is the way you prefer to eat and will stay on your calorie target? Fine. Beyond that, as others have already said, the way to improve a skinny fat body composition is resistance training. If you are at a healthy body weight but are skinny fat, you need to develop your muscle structure. Eating at maintenance while doing this will result in slow muscle gain and fat loss. You will reshape or "recomp" your body.10 -
You would be better off if you worked out, lifted weights, and ate a reasonable amount of calories from real foods with complex carbs, unsaturated fats, ample protein, and vitamins/minerals.
The problem with a "diet" is that they work for a while but most people have a hard time maintaining them because they require an extreme shift in behavior that is not sustainable. Can you really go your whole life without eating carbs? What happens when you go off the diet? You are likely to gain back again.
I think lifestyle changes towards eating healthier foods are more effective long term.10 -

Dear Posters,
This topic has been cleaned up and re-opened - and has had significant number of posts removed. For reference, our Community Guidelines have been updated, and although there is no change to the policies, there have been some clarifications. For this particular topic:
3. No Trolling
I WILL:
I will stay on-topic in an existing discussion.
I will report trolls instead of engaging them.
I will contribute politely and constructively to a discussion, or move on without posting.
I will ignore users.
I WON'T:
I won’t troll.
I won’t flamebait.
I won’t call someone out.
I won’t police other members.
I won’t feed the trolls.
I won’t take a discussion off-topic, it’s considered hi-jacking.
For anyone who may be confused, although the OP does mention the word "keto," they are asking for help with being skinny fat. Taking the discussion off-topic to make comments about the keto diet with no reference whatsoever to what the OP is asking about it's effectiveness in helping with being skinny fat is....taking the discussion off-topic. All comments related to that derail have been removed from the discussion.
If you find you cannot contribute politely and constructively to any topic in which the word "keto" appears, the best solution would be to not participate in those topics or click on them at all. If you find you cannot be polite and respectful to those who practice a different way of eating, which includes calling them out for current posts, past posts, or trying to police how they post and present information, it is suggested that you place those users on Ignore, or do not engage with them on the forums.
Please also note that the policy on Reactions in the community is now listed in the Community Guidelines. Please remember that using reactions in a hurtful manner, such as promoting content in which one user makes a hurtful or insulting comment to another member, or following a member throughout the forums to "woo" all of their posts, can result in a warning with points.
If you have any questions about the guidelines, you are welcome to send me a PM.

I mean the poster literally asks if the Keto diet is right for them... How are we supposed to answer the question honestly if it doesn't contain opinions about the Keto diet and its effectiveness? They actually didn't even appear to be asking for help about being skinny fat. That was second to questions about the Keto diet.1 -
Agreed but it did go pretty off the OP's topic and I am guity as charged.0
