the instructions say to have the quick bolt in the open position which just seems very wrong to me.

So a few things:
1. What trainer did you get? It's green like a Kurt Kinetic but I'm not sure if it actually is one?
2. That quick release doesn't look like it's going to work with the trainer, at least not from this angle. Did your trainer come with it's own quick release? If not can you buy one on their website?
3. Get a trainer tire or a cheap tire/old smooth that you're only going to use while on your trainer.
As an aside, I'm surprised your wheel has a quick release on it with the disk brake but googling says that it can be a thing.0 -
Is the wheel supposed to take a quick release? Most disc brake wheels use a thru-axle instead. (But I had a disc brake that used a TA for the front wheel and a QR for the back, so anything's possible.)0

you need a trainer skewer - you can get online or at most bike stores for about $10-$20

That.
The trainer should have come with a skewer specific for this type of use. If not, buy one as suggested.0 -
Also, assuming that is a kurt kinetic and assuming your bike is set up to use a through axle, kurt kinetic has specific through axles that work with their trainers. https://www.kurtkinetic.com/thru-axles/0

Hey, thanks everyone. The trainer did come with a skewer which I have now fitted. All is working okay. I don't really use this bike anymore since I got a dedicated road bike but will I have put the factory skewer back in to use the bike off the trainer?
The trainer is a cheap no brand thing from a department store.
The tires on the bike are cheap road tires I put on my mountain bike so I could go faster on the road and I don't really us the bike now so it's no biggie if I wear them out.0 -
I wouldn't think so, but I'm not sure what type of skewer would come with a cheap no-name dept store trainer. They should all work basically the same way...0
